I had a local show up while I was working on my engine. He thought I was the local shade tree mechanic from all the cars and parts laying around. He has the van listed in the title. It has a very sooty exhaust. He wants me to do a tune up on it. Aside from replacing the usual stuff, what can cause a sooty exhaust? I know it's too much fuel, what else?

It can't be good, I ran my finger around his tailpipe and it came out black, thick black soot.

do the full tune/clean and replace any sensors, whatever....

then use the van to haul a loaded trailer up a few long grades. trailer towing is a great way to clean out your engine!!!

Changed the rotor/cap, wires, pcv, and plugs. The contact points on the cap had disintegrated, the plugs were fouled, the coil was corroded, and the pcv was full of oil. Should run like crazy now.

I did score an original set of mopar wires, I just need to put new tips on them.
