Like the title says, were building an N/A 2.2 for our dirt track car because they have outlawed our 2.2 turbo ( finished 1st 2 out of the last three years, and 2nd place on the off year) Here's what we have. Our car is an L-body 2 door with 88-89 turbo 1 wiring and 555 5-speed, I figure all that stuff can stay. We have a fresh ported (stock valve) 782 head that we shaved 80 thou. We also have a fresh 83-84 2.2 HO bottom end and one of those long tube MP headers. I plan on bolting the intake and fuel system from the turbo mtr with an AFPR onto the N/A 2.2 and get at least the 150-160 HP we were getting from the turbo mtr(it just had a mitts turbo and we were only running 10lb's boost) Would like some input on some tricks to putting this stuff together if possible. I have a S-60 turbo cam(prob the highest lift cam I have for a 2.2) Has anyone run one of these? Am I better off with the stock N/A roller? Any ideas would be more than welcome!

I take it, (by the over abundance of response) that I'm already there! Cool, we'll see how it all works out.

Electronics will be your key- if you can get the fuel & timing dialed in you'll be quick... but stock turbo electronics are a LONG way off for this kind of application. Not sure what you rules allow, but a full standalone would be where I'd start.. if not recaled stock ecu would be 2nd choice, 3rd would be modified TBI electronics driving all 4 injectors.

Also going N/A you'll find gains by stepping up the size of the t-body. Also stick with the s-60 cam.. it'll destroy a stock N/A cam.

You must have a pretty loose ruleset there to get away with half the mods you have listed....

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the response, this is just a race they have 1 or 2 times a year that we decided to enter 3-4 years ago, so they kind of make up the rules as they go. So far all they've said is no turbo, besides, they all run headers and who knows what, but thier all v-8's so they get to do whatever they want! lol Go figure. I think if we win again this year they will prob ban FWD's all together! Any thoughts on what I should centerline the S60 cam at?

Thought I'd update you guy's on how things went with our little N/A convertion. We ended up putting things together exactly as I had described. Ran an 88 TBI roller cam instead of the S60. Gave it about 6 degrees advance when we installed it. Had to run a newer style PS pump to clear the header. Other than that we bolter it together, dropped it in with the 88 turbo intake manifold, stock TB and all the turbo electronics that were already there. Once everything was hooked up we fired it up, set the base timing to 14 degrees and that was it! Everything ran great, seemed responsive, so we took it for a little rip and it seemed to pull great. Loaded it up on the trailor and we were off to the races. Brent (my bro) ripped it around the track a couple times to warm up and I asked him if I should give it any more base timing(cause I wasn't sure if the turbo curve was going to be a prob) but he said the car pulled hard all the way to 6000 no problem, so we left it alone. First real indication of how fast we were was the Qualifying round. With the turbo mtr at 10psi he would usually Qualify a couple seconds ahead of the rest (this is for 2 laps) When they anounced the results he had Qualified #1 with a 7 second margine! Sufice to say, the rest of the day was a forgone conclusion. Unless the car broke, or someone took him out he would win his 3rd title in 4 years, and he did. Now we'll have to see if they outlaw his entire car for next year! lol In the mean time I'm going to check a few things out on the build. I didn't have time to hook up the LM1, so I'm not sure what our fuel mixture is yet but it's got to be preety close to dead on. Also, we're going to G-tec the car and see how it does VS it turbo other self. Anyway, sorry fore the novel, bottom line is that the turbo electronics seems to work perfectly, with out changing anything!

Dang sorry I missed it a 7 second lead in qualifying, they're going to make something up to slow you down next year.

I'm sure thier going to try, but I'm going to try to convince them to concentrate on being more competative themselves instead of waisting all their energy on trying to figure out ways to make Brent go slower! lol

I'll try and get some pics, they have a video every year that gets released about a month after the races. We had a glasspack with flange bolted to the header with a dump, but after the second warm-up lap the flange had dug some dirt and broke the flange off(header side). So we ran it wide open, thought we would have needed more backpreasure but it didn't seem to bother the car at all. Thing sounded mean as hell and surprizingly quiet at idle. One of the v-8 RWD guys was talking to Brent about his car after the races were over and said how impressed he was at the way the car handles the corner. My brothers response was that the car would take down any car on the track in a straight line. The v-8 guy then retorted" o.k. but on dry pavement I would own you", my bro, "the cars are here, let's go right now".....that was the end of that disscution! lol BTW the car is not street legal.
