I was monkeying around on my newly aquired 93 Sundance and noticed that the air box is stupid-restrictive! I don't necessarily care about performance, but I know that a smoother intake and exhaust make for a more fuel efficient vehicle.

I want to know about that sort of throttle-blade looking doo-dad on the driver's side that opens and closes a like 1-1/2 inch round hole off. What is the point of this thing? Can I completely get rid of it without messing anything up? I see there is a hose directly below it, I'm guessing that is a vacuum source of some kind.

Any input on making the car more efficient?

on my tbi setup the airbox isx slightly different, I did a full airbox gut delete,..the flapper you are speaking of is there for heated air from the manifold to rise thru to prevent icing in the winter time, I took the vacuum, the flapper out and sealed the box in its place...more air now
I am also using the Omni/Horizon airbox from a 90

If you pull the throttle body off the intake you'll see that the hole in the intake is even smaller than the TB bore. Opening that hole up will improve flow.

I ditched that stupid airbox and went with an Omni airbox. Netted me 5 MPG on the traveller.

make a CAI by running dryer ducting under the front of the car while your at it, maybe add a TB spacer or 2....goto the JY and get an extra gasket and RTV them together. you can do the ozone genererator mod too.

http://fueleconomytips.com/2006/09/1...one-generator/

these are a couple 'almost free' mods you can do for a lil extra power/effiency/gas milage

a couple other lil notes:
NGK ZFR5N spark plugs work well
removing the coolant lines from the intake manifold does NOT work, it makes your engine lag at lower RPMs
suspension mods make your car alot more fun!

If I remember in the morning I'll take a pictures of the set up I have. Granted I ditched my A/C which makes mine more effective. MIne does require a little fabbing, but it's nothing major. As long as you know how to use a cutter and welder you can have the fab work done in about 10 minutes. And i think all in all it cost me about $30 (including the extortionate amount I got charged for a cone filter) Like I said, come morning I'll take pictures, and if you want any info on any other ways to "ghetto rig" your intake feel free to drop me a line. Otherwise the Omni assembly looks pretty nifty.

On my 93 Shadow, I put the Omni air box on but the inlet was pointing at the tranny mount. I got the lower portion off of a v-6 and now the inlet points to the right side but I can fix that later. I opened up the part of the air box above the throttle cable ( the indented portion for cable clearance) with a torch and a 1x1 piece of wood.
Here is a picture of the Omni inlet.

If you do it, you have to heat the surrounding area about 1" beyond the part you want to move. Try to heat as evenly as possible and dont stay in one area to long or you might burn through when the temp. is right for re-forming. The temp is about right when the plastic starts to take on a shine to it. I said I used a piece of 1X1 earlier but it was a piece of 2x2 about 4" long. When its heated, push the wood toward the outside and leave it in there until it cools. I was going to use a piece of steel that fill perfectly in there but it would have sucked to much heat out of the plastic. One last thing, wear gloves, that plastic is quite warm.
