couple of other guys in another forum suggested I come here- looks like a active site!!!!!


Picked up a 89 daytona for the Daughter to use for the summer.2.5 efi non turbo.

problem is that the fan doesn't come on, temp sensor for the Ecu is changed, it runs not bad but up around 3k? rp m's it sounds like it's breaking down with small pops in the exhaust- smells a little like sulfur. idles fine
( need a emissions test to certify)

all new exhaust

now if I remove the connector for the temp sensor the fan comes on and it runs slightly rough- not really a good idle.

checked coil- nice healthy spark, cap, rotor and wires good, pulled plugs- gaped at .035. color is a tad on the lean side- slightly carbon on the plug.

any suggestions for both problems???

when you unplug the CTS, the car will idle funny, thats normal. it will turn the fan on and it will turn on the check engine light and go into limp mode. get the car up to operating temp and unplug the coolant sensor and check the timing with a light, top of the bell housing make sure it is correct. it could be the fan relay or you may have a problem in your PM. you will need to start checking wires with a diagram, need a manual to do this.

fan only comes on when the temp reaches 212°F. unpluging the sensor and the fan comes on says everything is working from the computer, relay and fan perspective. however it shouldn't run rough. sounds like time to put it on a scope, check spark patter, verify fuel pressure and volume, check distributor for loose hall-effect shutters, etc.

Were all 4 plugs carbon fouled? Is there any black smoke? Sulfur smell is Cat working to hard to clean up exhaust.Map Sensor is Dominant Fuel Control and they were an EXTREMLY HIGH FAILURE on TBI cars.
Also if only 1 or 2 plugs are fouled look for a vacuum leak specific to those cylinders. A central vacuum leak will introduce more air to ALL cylinders,Map will see this an call for increased injector pulse width and vehicle will run fine other than high idle speed but a vacuum leak specific to 1 cylinder will not be picked up by MAP and will cause a lean Misfire in that cylinder.A Misfire weather caused by Rich/Lean Fuel, Spark,Compression all have the same result,NO COMBUSTION,Fuel and Air In,Fuel and Air Out.
O2 Sensor does not have the Authority to make a vehicle run that rich since it is only a Fuel Trimmer but a lazy O2 will raise CO levels and drop fuel economy by up to 7 MPG. Average life expectancy is 60,000 miles.

all plugs same color- but not real bad!

checked all vac lines, shutter looks all together, no black smoke, all new exhaust- barely used-replaced lately, idles fine, checked all wires

will double check the timimg

have the Chilton manual- but very lacking in the wiring!

any body have the full wiring diagrams for this beast??????

Have diagrams for late 60-70 beasts

Been awhile since I worked on TBI and just remembered,Check Fuel Injector.
Look at Fuel spray and Pattern with a Timing Light, Spray should be fine mist with no droplets or drips,also make sure no fuel dripping fom Injector after shutting engine off.If any of the above conditions exist replace the Fuel Injector.Cleaning will not correct this problem as TBI does not use a Pintle where Fuel Based Deposits can build up on the sides of the Injector Housing.
Took awhile for brain to engage but I now remember replacing as many Injectors as MAP Sensors on TBI in the late 80's,early 90's.

The fan isn't engaging under normal conditions, but what is the temperature? Is it reaching 212*? Maybe you have a busted thermostat and it isn't holding the coolant in the head. If you aren't reaching operating temperature it would cause mild fueling issues. Correct me if I'm wrong those that remember better than I, but won't the computer stay in Open Loop mode until it sees a certain temp from the sensor?

cleared all codes- engine light is off!!

never thought about the thermostat- upper rad hose is real hot when running and just idling!!! so I'm not sure of exact temp!!!!!!

Yes it will stay in "Open Loop" until all parameters are met, if coolant temp stays low it will also set a Code 17 Low Engine Temp.
Air in the system will cause the same problem with no coolant circulating around CTS,there is not a bleed in the thermostat,air in the block has no where to go,you have to remove the plug in the head behind thermostat housing when draining and filling to remove air.

thanks for all the suggestions!!!!

car passed with flying colors for the emissions!!!!! guess I was a little to hard on it for the little problems-

but it need a left tie rod and wheel bearing!!!!!

so it should be on the road tomorrow!!!

I'll check in here as I do in many other mopar sites though they are for the 60-70 beasts as I have a 71 Challenger- Deputy Coupe, 67 Dodge Charger and restoring a 73 Road Runner right now!!
