So Im looking at buying a 84 rampage from a local guy. 2.2/5spd all stock. Im one of those lucky guys that needs to make everything faster. lol. Anyways here is what Im thinking for a motor...

use the factory 2.2 block
782 casting head for the comp bump (how much)
88 tbi cam
TBI header

any idea on what that would bump the HP to?

.5

You will only do so much, what really needed is bit of head porting and milling the head or also bit of meat off the block's deck to raise the compression ratio a bit.

Other than that, the intake design on the carb 2.2 is sucky. Dual carb with specific intake helps big time but are you willing to do much work?

There is not as such as free lunch.

Cheers, Wizard

Im not looking to make this into a drag car, I have a S60 tona for that. Im acutally looking for a DD that is fun to drive, but not a drag car. I just wanted to know what kind of gain I would get from minor mods using parts that I already own.

thanks

I agree with what is listed above on the head and block. I would add: pickup a 2.5" exhaust. dual carbs would be a great way to gain some more power. upgrading the ignition(wires, coil, etc) would provide some changes im sure.

+1 on the head mill for a bit of CR increase

+1 on the later TBI roller cam

then convert to TBI - ditch the Holley ; once you drive TBI 5-spd Lbody you will DETEST the carb; massage the TB a bit - clean casting flash, knife-edge throttle blades, make sure gasket & TB/intake mani line up nice

biggest power and fun factor gain is a header and accompanying free-flowing exhaust ; try to find one of the original long-tube Hooker (used to be sold by DC) or I believe Heddman also makes a 2.2/2.5 which is almost as nice as the Hooker

CAI

UDP & manual steering rack (or pull P/S belt)

aftermarket coil, good wires

'gasket match' head & intake / exh mani's

PT lifters / 3.3 beehives

rev the crap out of it

if your dead se on a carb. a 2bbl. from a 360 or 390 ford will physically bolt two you intake. otherwise, i have to agree with the throttle body setup. had a 90 omni with this. was real responsive. another thing you can do is get a custom intake and go with a 390 cfm holley. it does work. had a similar setup on an 84 charger 2.2. this was back when you could get all sorts of funky stuff for the 2.2.

if you are going to get away from carbs since it requires a computer change, might as well do MPI with megasquirt or you could mess with the stock electronics from a tbi car

A 38/38 Weber DGES works well. It bolts right on and is non-progressive (both barrels open together)

In drag racing or autox where you rev up and down alot and work through the gears, I can see where the TBI or MPI would be an advantage.. but on a circle track where you right near the top all the time.. would a carb be better ?

Get a 1980 (1 year only) distributer from the 1.7 VW engined Omni, swap the shaft for a 2.2 ditributer, and viola! A vacuum advance distributer for a 2.2 carb Omni. Saw one brand new on Fleabay recently.

Get a 1985 G-cast head / port /polish/mill/bigger valves

Early production 88 TBI cam, convert your head to rollers.

Extra (or 2) carb spacers.

Port/Polish intake.

2.5 exhaust, low restriction muff and cat

Mexican cast iron ex manifold. Flows about as good as a header, but won't flex and break.

MSD Blaster stuff/ wires. etc.

K & N

Ditch the airpump

Underdrive pulley

Remove A/C if you don't mind being hot.

If you did all of that, you'd make maybe 130 hp on pump gas.

Nice.. what about 2.2 flat top pistons inside that 2.5 block ? Get the head shaved a bit 030 and switch to the shorter timing belt ?
