My duster took a crap on me the other day and I have no idea where else to look.

Sooo...
I was on my way to work and my car wouldn't start at the gas station. I popped the hood and the battery was looking like it was about to explode, so I went and got a new one, put it in and started driving to go to work and the volt gauge was through the roof. I stopped and picked up a new one and it drove fine the rest of the way to work.

I was driving home and noticed it smelled like someone using a blowtorch and it didn't have any power at all. Worse than normal by far. I pulled over and popped the hood and the exauhst manny and pipe was BRIGHT orange. (It actually got hot enough to melt down the pipe. No joke.

We trailered it home the next day, drove it on and off the trailer and around the block with no problems, except no power or response.

I checked the back of the exauhst to see if it was a plugged cat and it had enough pressure to blow my hand off the pipe, so I ruled that out. I noticed the belt on the driver's side of the cam is completely missing.

What exactly is that part called/what's it do? I am guessing some kind of spark advance box, but I know nothing about carbed cars.

Please help. I miss driving the duster.

i think you need to put that belt back on it must be important since it came with the car originally

I am pretty sure its an smog pump. I am not sure that the problem lies there. My best guess is the timing belt skipped a few teeth. About the battery overcharging, that is probably your voltage regulator. You have many issues.

So
1. check your timing both the cam timing and ignition timing.
2.smog pump- put a belt on there.
3.check to see about the voltage regulator, the smell might be hydrogen being expelled by the battery from overheating because it's getting overcharged.
4.Check for vacuum leaks.
Check those and report back

I also have 2 extra turbo engines sitting in the basement waiting for eventual transplants (when I get the money saved for an A413 with a RMVB so I can put it in the Duster. I have enough extra parts do go ahead and do another neon/5 lug conversion, FI harnesses, etc. etc.
The only thing I don't have is the TBI hanger assembly and Turbo fuel tank, but a new one is around 100 bucks from Autozone.


So with that said, this is my first carbureted 4 cylinder Chrysler product. I don't know a whole lot about it and really don't have the time to work on it, since I'm working close to 60 hours every week in a hot factory. But I can tell you I do know how to do a turbo swap.

I was thinking maybe with all the heat being generated under the hood (Lot of heat) from the timing issues that maybe it was tearing up the battery or harming the regulator possibly? You figure the reg sits within 1 to 1 1/2
feet from an exauhst that got so hot it melted the pipe down. Just a shot in the dark, but I'm thinking very possible?

if you read your start of this post, it's totally obvious you dont have a clue what the belt isfor on the driver side. man get real
but then anyone can make up all the bs they want on the internet eventhough you prolly dont have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out

I've got close to 3K into the Rampage I also have the Daytona too. You don't know me from anyone else on here and obviously I frequent the boards more often than you and in my 4 years of working on TD's I can straight up tell you right now to...

the belt on the driver's side of the head is for the air pump......I cut mine off as soon as I was emissions exempt and never had those issues.....all it does is add air to the exhaust to help oxidize carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. as for the voltage spike, check your voltage regulator, I had the same thing happen a month ago.....

red exhuast with out putting a lot of load on the car means usually timing out of whack. either cam timing(most likely) or spark timing. smog pump is only there for emisions reasons. +1020394857 on the voltage regulator..

or

turbo motor time

I checked the timing belt a little bit ago and it was off by quite a few teeth. I fixed that and now am still getting the "blowtorch" smell I was getting like when the manifold got super hot. Seems to be putting out quite a bit of pressure out the tailpipe... leaving me to think the cat isn't plugged.

Sooo... what could be causing the smell? Now that the car is timed, it's not getting very hot under the hood, so that seems to be taken care of, but the smell keeps getting stronger the more you drive it.
