Hello all I'm new here and to dodge's in general, cept for the baron I had for a brief 6 months. I've been and still am a Volvo guy (RWD era). Anyway I just picked up an 83 Omni with a 2.2L and an autotragic as my commuter car. It's mostly highway driving and I'm noticing that my RPM's could be a bit lower at 65 mph. I was wondering if any newer chryslers had a trans with overdrive that I could directly swap in.

Thanks

-C

No overdrive for automatic in that era, all 3 speed.

Easiest solution is to use taller -14"or 15" 4-lug wheels from an'84 or older F.W.D. Chrysler. Greater circumference = less RPMs'. The difference between your 13"ers and some 15"ers ( maybe some old GLH or Shelby Charger 15" 4 lug swiss-cheese wheels with 195x60x15s') would be around 15 to 20 percent reduction in RPMs' at 65 MPH!

maybe able to throw in a '90's trans with a lock-up conv. should drop the rpm 200-300
not sure how to wire in the lock-up, should be able to do it manually

you will need the trans., conv., flexplate, and axles though too (from different cars and years to make it work)

better off just buying a stick trans from me
I've got the pedals, cables, shifter, ect....
is the body straight ?, just give me the car before you go broke

Just kidding welcome

83 is 6 bolt flywheel with a 3 bolt torque converter. 86 and on is 8 bolt flywheel with 4 bolt torque converter (I think). So I would say your best bet is taller tires or 5 speed swap.

I'd love to do a 5spd. But feasibly.... not sure if the car is worth doing that (i'll have to get pics, I just repaired about a 12x12 rust hole in the floor), unless it is easier that I am assuming. Is the lug pattern 4x100?

you don't have to change the hubs to switch trans.
but yes you have 4x100mm
the turbo cars are 5x100mm

Yea I know I was just asking the lug pattern for wheels.... 4x100's are so easy to come by from vws and hondas in the picknpulls

Also, the non turbo 85 and 86 GLH were also 5 lug. Which, wierdly enough, can accept the Grand Am 14 inch wheels with a little bit of grinding on the inside.

That's why I said "'84 & older"! '84 GLHs' & Shelby Chargers', AND '83 1/2
Shelby Chargers had the four-lug 15" swiss-cheese wheels! I didn't know Hondas' had 15" wheels stock.

Just drive the omni as-is, there is no point to do any modification to it due to the rust.

It's an easy swap to put lockup in.use 4bolt flexplate and overlay a 6 bolt section onto the 8 bolt plate and tack weld and just ream the holes that don't line up.put in late axles and you're in business.Did this swap in my 85 Laser and picked up about 2mpg mostly due to the higher geared transfer gears tho! still turns about 2900 rpm @72 mph.I just wired the lockup to a switch.I try to keep it locked up as much as possible in town as this is where you really need it . On the highway stock convertor is pretty much locked anyway above 2500 or so.
