i just brought home a 1986 plymouth duster stock car that is 90 per cent done but for some reason when they installed the cage they also removed 95% of the dash wiring and all the wiring from the steering coloum. i am going to install a starter switch and need to know what wires to use and if there is anything else that needs power ??

for a race car, just rip out ALL the stock wiring. then start from scratch. you'll need a couple toggle switches, an in line fuse, a master kill switch and a push button switch. I also encourage you to get a Steve Smith racing book. you'll find simple wiring instructions in this book.

think about what you need to power and how to get power there. concider safety, ease of repair/diagnosis. all you need to power is the ignition coil, ignition module, electric fan, and starter. the rest of the stock wiring can go to the trash (or recycle since copper is big $). on a stock car, you don't need an alternator (just trickle charge the battery during the week and a fully charged battery is good for a whole night of racing)
