i was given a oil pan and was told it was a pre common block pan so i started to baffle the pan which has a sump in it that looks like a tear drop, i removed the pan that i will be replacing and noticed that it is flat without a drop in it. whats the diffrences between the two and can i use the tear drop sumped pan in place of the flat pan ???

almost forgot that the motor is a carbed 1987 2.2

Sounds like you got a CB 2.2 pan. I not to sure what it going to take make it work or not on a pre CB motor

really easy to tell. all common block and 1986-1988 2.5 pans use a different seal on each end. all 1988 and older 2.2 pans use the same seal on each end of the pan (front seal and rear seal are the exact same shaped kinda like a "U") so your 1987 2.2 carb engine will need an oil pan that has a the "U" shape on both ends.
