I have an 89 Horizon 2.2 auto : ( and shes not doing to well in the power department. What can i do to give it a little more power without converting it to carb or having the head done. Still have the stock muffler and the cat still on, and the stock intake. I do have a turbo and manifold off of a caravan but dont know how the motor would take to it, it has 78k miles on it. If anyone has any ideas let me know, and ive already been on the allpar.com 2.2 page and havent tried any of those.

You could get a larger exhaust and a underdrive pulley.

somethings you can do, but before you do these, clean up the motor and everything.

Solid mounts
new timing belt
champ 438 plugs
new wires
Spacers
2.25in exhaust
long tube header
k&n filter

These make a different that you will notice.

Also, if you can, swap a 5sp.

detobias is keeping our cars running
Start with a FULL tune-up (including fuel & air filters) & check/replace timing belt (<20$) ...

then - decide how much money vs time you got , and how much U want to spend on the project; I would prolly spend some $ on tires/brakes/suspension ; thats a diff topic

easy stuff in order of expense
hacksaw off muff (and cat if legal where yur at) ; replace with straight pipe
remove AC belt ; if not working pull pump lines condensor
remove PS belt ; pump too?
retard cam 4deg
K&N drop in or homemade CAI w/ cone
underdrive pulley (UDP)
new 2.25 or 2.5 exhaust; got $$ , add a longtube Hooker

difficult but cheap
port exh mani
port head
mill head for CR bump
5sp swap!
turbo swap

for about $60 and a few hours of your time, you can gain about 15-20hp. and no it's not a snake-oil trick. just have the head milled about .040" it's not enough to upset the tbi system, barely effects the cam timing (not enough to notice) but you will definitely notice the power gain. however it would be advise able to run 89 or better fuel.

going with the other inputs.. check your ignition timing and cam timing (that the belt didn't jump) with ignition timing, verify it's advancing to at least 34 at 3000 rpms. and that you have 12-14 base timing at idle with the coolant sensor disconnected
