So I am in the process of changing my intake/exhaust gasket on my 2.2. Right as i take off both of the manifolds (same time due to a stuck egr bolt) coolant starts to leak from the head area... As it appears, its coming from a exhaust manifold stud. The stud did come out with the nut. It was the stud on the carburetor side of the 2nd intake runner.

So im sitting here think cracked head?? Is there a coolant galley in that area?
Is it supposed to do this? Dont quite know...

Any input would be great!

thanks, vinnie

couple of those EM studs pass into coolant passages

so you need some sealant on them for reassembly ; I use medium (blue) threadlok

Actually all EM studs passes thru the cooling passage. clean up and put thread sealer on these studs and reinstall. Get nut off the stud first through.

Also same for intake manofold bolts. These have to be sealed as well so need to clean these threads up too.

On driver's side 2 of 4 bolt holes pass through oil cavity, so get these sealed as well if you had these bolts removed. Not under pressure, just flood of oil sitting in the valve train area and drains back to crankcase.

Cheers, Wizard

Alright!! Thanks guys. That's probably the best news Ive hear all day.

Anything else I should be thinking about while both manifolds are off? I cleaned the surfaces and it doesn't look like there is too much carbon built up in either... I'm thinking its ready to slap back on.

thanks again, Vinnie
