Ok all. I have an 87 plymouth Horizon, carb, auto, ect. I'm going to be converting it to MPI this upcoming weekend. All of the parts will be from an 85 Shelby Charger parts car. I'm going to grab the complete wiring harness for the entire vehicle, the fuel tank, both computers, intake manifold, TB and all sensors. The whole shebang.

My only question is, since I'll be converting this thing to MPI, and obviously using the original turbo computer, injectors, ect, will there be any negative effects on using the turbo setup on a non-turbo engine??? I'll basically be making a higher-compression turbo engine setup, with no turbo. I can deal with a constant "power loss" light just as long as there is no adverse performance effects. My goals are both improved performance and higher gas mileage. So what do all of you experts think and recommend??? Is this doable, and if all works out properly, how much better gas mileage/performance should I expect???

Any and all help/comments/dire predictions are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks!!!

honestly I dont see the point. It can be donte that way but ur basicly doing a turbo swap minus turbo. It will be quicker and probably have like 110 HP or sumtin like thatbbut why not do the turbo swap (only thing different is use a turbo motor with a turbo. and make 150 stock and get it to 200 very easily.

Ul kick ur self later if u dont.

and performance wont be that much over a TBI. I could maybe expect 10-15 HP with probably worse gas milage (because the computer will go into close loop mode when at WOT) which will eat the gas and probably cause some bogging down.

Welll I don't have the money to build a turbo motor tight now, as the turbo motor I got needs a freshenong and the turbo rebuilt. I'm getting all pieces for alike $100 for the wiring/fuel system , so that's all I've got for right now. I'll keep you all posted on the project though!!!

didnt 85 shelby chargers have log manifolds??? that would be WORSE than the tbi manifold with no boost through it, hahah.

I'm not concerned too much about the high-performance aspects right now. I'm mainly looking for drivability/fuel economy. When I find a good long-block turbo car to work with, I'll just drop the whole thing in and have a turbo car.

as long as you get the right manifold you can have a much wider powerband and pick up some good power, but getting better mileage is probly gonna retire putting some time into tuning it well.

The only problem is too much fuel at WOT.

Best bet is a custom cal.

I disagree. Everyone has different goals. There is no reason to add a turbo, and it is NOT just as easy. To do the MPI you just swap wiring and manifolds. To do a turbo you need to do an entire engine swap. (you cant drill and tap the oil return with the block in the car, and the CR is too high)

But your gona be pulling head to swap manifolds etc. It wouldnt be much more work to drop a new motor into it. For the gains its nto worth it in my mind.

you dont HAVE to pull the head, its just easier. if you are intending to keep your tbi motor, this swap is worth it imo.

As I said above, it won' be turbocharged until I get a longblock and the turbo rebuilt. Until then, it's just going to be MPI. And also, you have to pull the head to swap manifolds???

Nope, which was going to be my next point.

On a NON turbo car there is enough room to swap the manifold without pulling the head, even if you use the t2 intake. He is using the early t1, which is even easier! In fact, arguably, using the early t1 is good enough if you just want the reliability of FI with perhaps a few more HP as it is so low profile its very easy to work with. Also, 85/86 T1 electronics are easier to find. If you use a t2 intake you need to add the 86/87 add-on harness 2 the t1 harness and use an 86+ dist/hep.

Here is the mod - simplified.

Take 1 complete wiring harness for your application with both computers and all solenouds and relays.

Take 1 early t1, t2, or 2 peice intake manifold with fuel rail, injectors, harness, tb, and sensors.

Bolt on the manifold.

Attach the wiring.

Replace all rubber setion of fuel line with hi-pressure Fuel Injection hose.

Replace fuel tank with tbi/turbo style tank

Use turbo fuel pump.

Done. <------

BTW, since no one bought my 87 Carb horizon (I couldnt seem to give it away) I am doing this exact mod (with a T2 intake).

even if you dont have quite enough room to get the manifolds off with the head in the car just with it sitting there, you can disconnect the front motor mount and put a jack in between the front of the motor and the core support, and twist the motor a bit so the head moves forward in the car a bit. im sure you could break your motor mounts if you pushed this too far but so far i havent.
