Could i just bypass my intake manifold coolant lines? Are they needed to keep the intake cool? On turbo cars there doesn't seem to be any coolant lines to the intake manifold, so couldn't i just get rid of them on my tbi too?

Has anyone ever done this before, and do you see any gains?

Hi,

You could try bypassing them and see what the result is, I'm sure it won't negatively affect anything permanently.

Although the aluminum intake does sit precariously close to the exhaust manifold, so you may wish to rethink removing them, just in case they really are needed.

Best of luck,
Craig

the idea is to use the hot coolant to heat up the intake air when the engine is still warming up! once the engine is fully warmed, a seperate cooling system for the intake manifold would be the ideal! check out the dodgegarage.com where this has been discussed!

I have an 88 TBI 5 speed omni and i tried that .noticed a very small pick up in the mid range.i had already added a spacer under the TBI ,along with 14* of timing, stock replacment K&N with free flowing intake box,and a 2.25 complete exhaust of a shelby charger tI.when i did this i discover that with the lines removed it would stumble bad off the line ,bogging out big time.i would say try it for your self and see but i found that it created a problem.(problably my crap luck who knows?) keep me posted ,interested to see how it works for you.

Problem is, in the winter, with the TBI, the fuel can freeze the butterfly, or at best freeze to the bottom of the intake. Even with that hot exhaust right below it, unless you come to a stop for awhile for the heat to soak, it won't help. Gotta remember that when the fuel is sprayed it, some of it evaporates, causing the air temperature to drop, which helps freeze up things like the butterfly.. I did this to an old carb'd car, and at one point when the engine just flat out stopped running, I got out to find a carburetor that looked like it had been filled with liquid nitrogen.. Ice all over the outside of it.. Crazy.. MPFI doesn't have this problem because the fuel is sprayed directly into the intake port, hitting the back of the very hot valve.. A good thing..

Living in Canada, it is a must to keep the lines on during the winter, in the summer it really doesn't matter much. there is no performance gain or loss on a stock engine. Without heating the intake, your fuel will condense causing horrible driveablity.

i did the water line removal mod....one of the few mods on tbi i regretted.

i loved my tbi shadow.....and would ...never .....do this mod on any mopar....ever....i did allmost every mod out there....

and as a side thought...i would be extremely cautious about trying to get big hp gains by advancing timing to far...it can really hurt the motors....when there are enough mods to gain power........

must do's in my opinion....ram air/k&n....and i made sweet gains with those four pronged platinum plugs...(not for turbo use).

good luck

I bypassed the intake on my '87 charger. No problem in Seattle (although it sounds like it didn't work for Una) However when it's in the single digits here in Chicago it bogs off the line. I gotta get that hooked back up when the 14" of snow melts and I can get to the garage!
