I am trying to help a friend get his mother's 85 Reliant 2.2L TBI running right. It runs very rich most of the time, but will periodicly run perfectly. We have replaced the coolant sensor and the MAP sensor. The MAP was a MOPAR replacement. When it is running rich, the manifold vacuum is around 5" hg, when direct vacuum (15" hg) is applied to the MAP sensor, it will clean up and bring the manifold vacuum up to around 10-12" hg. When it decides to run right, the manifold vacuum will come up to 15+" hg. I'm afraid it's the logic module, but they are real hard to find. This is the last of the Bosch TBI units before Chrysler switched to Holley. Any ideas?

Already changed all the vacuum lines, so far doesn't give any codes.

Not as rich as it runs, acts like the injector is at maximum pulse width. Logic Module PN is 5226974, anybody got one? When it is acting up, even with the coolant sensor unpluged, the timing is all over, worse than normal for a Chrysler product. It wiil jump from 6 or 8 to out of site, then hover around 12 where it should be, then jump all over. Don't know if the car was jump started before I saw it.

My 87 Plymouth Sundance Turbo does this as well. I know the lifters and at least follower are on their way out, which will effect the running of the car. Engine vacuum is a factor of a number of things. How much air and fuel are available for the engine at a particular speed (AIS motor? TPS? Plugged passages on the throttle body?) Cam timing (A worn cam or a jumped belt will effect this) or ignition timing (a worn distributor, intermediate shaft or a faulty ignition reference sensor will effect this) How tight the rings are sealing in the bores can also effect this, but rarely would it be a on again/off again issue.
I know Ineed to look at these issues on my car, but since its my DD I'm afraid to look to hard under the hood until I have a backup car running properly.
Best Regards,
Stefan

New timing belt and cam and distributor set up properly. TPS seems good, AIS works as well as can be expected on one of these. Cam looked good when replacing the VC gasket. When it runs right vacuum comes up to 15" hg.

If your really dropping to 5 inches, you have a mechanical problem, leaking valve, loose valve seat, bad valve guide etc!

You say it cleans up when direct vacuum is applied to the map sensor? Are you talking like with a handheld vacuum pump? Welcome to the world of speed density fuel injection. When the computer sees less vacuum, it assumes the engine is under a heavier load and gives it the amount of fuel that it should have for that kind of load at your current RPM.. Think of it like this, how far down would your gas pedal have to be to be at 5" vacuum, and how much load would have to be on the engine to keep the RPM's where they are.. The computer assumes your lugging, and is giving it some gas. But your not lugging, just trying to idle..
I agree with turbovanman, something is mechanically wrong. Timing belt off a couple teeth, valves broken/stuck/burnt.. Check the timing belt, then pull the head and have it checked out at a machine shop.

Everything mechanical checks, new timing belt, cam good, no vacuum leaks. I went through the MAP circuit (this is the built in the LM MAP). If I never got decent vacuum, I would agree, but, it will come up to around 9" and start to clean up. If I reach in the TBI unit and plug the end of the injector with a finger tip, it will run for a few seconds on the eccess fuel in the intake, then stall. When it is doing this the vacuum will climb up to 15" just before it stalls. This thing is pig rich, looks like a diesel with a retarded or over rich injection. I had a Ford 302 TBI system that did this on 4 cyls. it turned out to be a bad ECM, that's what this acts like, like the injector is being commanded full on most of the time. I was hoping some one had some old, no longer needed parts for this beast as it belongs to a friend's mother and is generally in excellent condition. Thanks.

Well, I'm still fighting with this beast. My Cary NC friend has a power module that will work, but I would still like to find a logic module to try in it.
