The choke is all the way open all the time. So it doesn't want to start or get over about 1500 rpm. If somebody holds it shut it will start right up and revs just fine. Is the choke adjustable or do I need to get another carb or choke out of the junk yard?

It's a 88 Dakota with a 2.2L and a 5 speed. It has been sitting for a year and a half untill today when I bought it. It wasn't getting spark is why the guy parked it. The problem was the thing in the distributor with the 4 blades sticking up had broken off so I replaced the dist. and got it started. But now I need to get the choke figured out so I can drive it home.

Thanks,
Greg

First, TBI (throttle body injection) does NOT have a choke... 2nd 1987 and 1988 dakotas DO NOT have TBI... so you have a carburator that the choke is stuck. so get some carb and choke cleaner, check linkage, make some adjustments.

Update. I rebuilt the carb and still had the same problem, it wouldn't rev up without starting to die. So we noticed some of the vac lines going to the charlcoal canister were broke so we capped the lines at the carb. Then it would rev up pretty good, but now it boggs down and starts to die right after I let out the clutch. So know I don't know what else to try. Sure could use some advise.

get a shop manual, memorize the vacuum routing diagram, follow trouble shooting proceedures in the book... when you "rebuilt" the carb, did you make all the proper adjustments. or sell the truck and get an EFI one that doesn't have all these problems

I've got the hayne's manual. The vacuum lines look right, but like I said the 3 going to the charlcoal cannister are blocked off. I did the adjustments, all but the fast idle. My plan is to convert this truck over to a efi turbo, but I need to drive it as a daily driver first for awhile. Do you think it could be the gas filter? Had to order one and it won't be here till tuesday.

I can do a screenshot from Mitchell-on-demand and email it to you if you need it. Haynes manuals leave a lot to be desired. Look at the emission sticker, there should be a vacuum diagram on it.

That screen shot from Mitchell might help. It's got to be better than Haynes. Thanks.

Still haven't got it running right. I've tried everything base gasket, capped vacuum lines at carb, adjusted everything twice, 2 fuel filters, and checked fuel pressure it's at 5 1/2 psi. Should I try another carb or what? It still wants to bogg down and die when I easy into the pedal unless I put my hand over the top of the carb then it revs just fine. Thanks for your help!!!!!!!

get rid of it or convert immediately. You'll never fix it over the internet... I'm 20+ year ASE master technician, former Chrysler factory service trainer and so-on.... The carburated 2.2 stuff just flat out sucks... it's soooooooo difficult to get them right (I even trained guys on how to do the setups the right way using propane injection) still, they are soooo tempermental, that even an "expert" like me cringes at the thought of working on them... much less even attempt to fix it over the internet.

The fact of you "choking" the carb and it runs better says it's running way to lean... this is from a vacuum leak somewhere ( intake, carb, throttle plate shafts, vacuum lines, brake booster, EGR, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc)
