Hello All. I'm a first time poster but a long time reader of this forum . I have a 2003, 2500 Dodge Ram TD, edge performance module, and K&N cold air intake kit. Recently, I've noticed a strange sound under the hood when shifting into overdrive. The sound seems to be coming from the air intake filter and sounds like back pressure being releases through the intake filter with a shutter ? I did notice this sound a few times prior to installing the air intake but was muffled by the OME filter box. Anybody have any idea what this may be or what I should be checking??? I have not noticed a reduction of power or MPG. I hate to take it to a mechanic if it is something simple I could do myself. Thanks for your help......

It almost sounds like compressor surge. Surge happans when you are under boost and lift the throttle to shift and the air slams into the throttle body and surges back to the turbo compressor making a shuttering sound. On diesels you have no TB but you can still have surge. Is the air filter assy capable of the boost you are running?

Try a quick run with no filter or tube on the turbo inlet see if the problem is still there.

I purchased the K&N cold air intake system that was specified for a 2003 Ram Cummins. The shutter was also present when the factory air box and filter were installed??? I will try running it without the air intake and see what happens.... I failed to mention that my truck has an automatic transmission. I also noticed that if I turn off the overdrive switch and allow the engine to reach ~2000 rpm and 50 MPH the shutter does not happen when I turn the overdrive back on and the transmission changes gears . The shutter and back pressure also disappears if the rpms are greater than 2000 rpms (full throttle) and the transmission shifts into overdrive.

Are you sure its not torque converter noise?

I'm not sure???? Does torque converter noise produce a back pressure sound that seem to come from the air intake???? I tried running my truck this morning without the K&N filter and tube but nothing has changed.....

Well if theres no tube/intake assy its can be noise from the air box area...Problems elsewhere. Torque converters can shudder, and depending on how much power and drive style as well as wear and tear the converter may be acting up. Im thinking its a trans/converter issue.

Keep us posted.
