Does anyone know what the rated towing capacity is for a 2.5l NA Dakota?
SOHC 2.2/2.5 family motor (not the later Jeep derived 2.5l 4 cylinder version)

I think the factory # is 2,000lbs. That dose not mean you can't tow more than that, but that is all your drivetrain / chassie was designed for. I had a ranger with the 2.9 V6 I towed cars on flat bed trailers with. It was only rated for 3500lbs. I was just really careful.

those 5spd trannies behind the 2.5 in the dakota are the weak link. the 2.5 itslef is a decent towing engine if you got it geared right, but its not a good choice for a large load unless you turbo it and do everything to ensure long-haul durability

the 94-95 have the AX-15 which is also in the 3.9 V6 trucks. I would think that trans would be able to hold the power and abuse of towing for quite a while.

I pulled my '86 omni 700+ miles on a tow dolly behind my '91 2.5-speed 2WD 3.92FDR dakota; did OK, and still got 15-17mpg; tough to go much faster than 65 or so ; I wouldnt want to pull *much* more than that for a long distance...

however crosswinds and slush on roads made it a tail-wagger :big eyes: pucker up!

I have also had 2000# of topsoil in same truck; there was NO suspension travel in back; rubber bump stops were mashed onto axle; that was *too* much weight; it will haul 1000# comfortably but much more than that and it is pretty much maxed (rated at 1250# which I think is a reasonable MAX)
