Oh boy lot of things said i see and very false, ok for starters the fuel injection setup on the starquest, was it poor yes, but hopeless NOT by any stretch. Plnety of people made serious power off the stock/modded
TBI setup. Now the bottom end of our motors are one of the strongest of all 4 cylinders, the head being a problem area BUT aftermarket heads or a 2.6 caravan head(not jet valved) is a good change. Keep them cool they are good. Problem people confuse with our heads is they got the car with the previous owner overheated the engine due to poor thermostat(we know the cheap owners of the starquest) clogged rads, famous electrical fans not comming on etc. Car is 20 plus years old its gonna need help with these items to keep an engine running factory cool. I have had many SQ's and currently doing another MPI one. My most recent (89 starion) I had done a aftermarket head (no port/polish) felpro perf 9116pt head gasket with ARP head studs, customized the
TBI and used some high flower injectors, braided lines, walbro pump, evo3 ported big 16g with custom header and ran at 20
psi for a year and half daily!!! and for the first part of the work did daily 160 mile a day work weeks with me and beat it just about everyday some sort of the way to work lol. Very fast car solid 13's with full weight SQ too. Easily could have been 12's or better but these cars weigh a lot for the most part. Coulda squeezed some more power out by also porting polishing, doing more work to the distributor woulda helped to gain a little more timing retarding and tossin the vaccum advance but hey got a good offer from someone to buy the car for a nice amount so hey screw it. Oh and the custom evo3 turbo swap is a pain and the wastegate didnt open and close the best so it was a nother night and day difference when i had that functioning well on and off, tough to get it solid cus i did the project around KDM intercooler piping i already had instead if doing piping around the turbo swap setup.
NOW second thing. You CAN!!! use the
dsm engine in the SQ, however u would want the 4g64 block (wodeblock from mitsu truck 89 and such). Using 2 stock SQ engine mounts from the same side i think 2 driver side mounts it bolts right up and takes the SQ tranny setup stock!!! Now u toss a
dsm 4g63
dohc head on that 4g64 block and u got soemthing nice as it is sohc stock but that
dohc head bolts right up!! Food for though brotha as going v8 is a mere unnecesity (i have done it for fun) car sat for 3 years cus i left it to rot, went on to a mpi swap built 2.6 starquest and found a much more broad impressive car than the v8 project ever would have been!!! If u really have any questions feel free to contact me i have more then enough of ur answers to getting that car some serious power using the 2.6 if u got a little dough to throw off (more so the same amount or less u would spend getting another 4g64 engine and
4g63 head and doing that swap up lol Or by going v8).
