so im going to start the rear wheel conversion, slowly, but im going to do it, first thing is to do is the rear end, with coilovers, so i dont have to do the suspension twice.

here are my options:
  • dana 44 from a jeep cherokee
  • ford 8.8
  • crysler 9.25
  • IRS 8.8/44/other

the dana 44 and 9.25 use a typical 1310/1350 u joint yoke..... the same ones that im having problems with in my cherokee, the cast ears break off, u joint cap spits out, and then the driveshaft hits everything under the jeep.... dunno if theres a fix for this, u joint u bolt straps may fix this

8.8 has a flat 4 bolt flange, fixes that..... but its made by ford, and a little narrow

IRS opens a can of worms, definatly doable, but trying to decide if its worth it, i dont know how much better it handles, but when working at mazda, the speed6, rx8 and miata were some of the best handling stock cars that ive ever driven, all IRS.....

opinions are definatly welcome, on my list, or feel free to add some of youre own

At the Woodward Dream-Cruise (in Mich.) a couple of years ago there was a '85 or'86 Red Daytona w/ a 340, a 904 auto. and a stock-width B-body 8 3/4 rear end. From the side all rims looked "normal" , as the rears had most of the off-set on the inside. Hard to tell it was V-8 RWD until he Booted-it!!

yeah, 8.75 is a nice axle, but, at $400-1200, not worth it IMO, the dana 44 and 9.25 i have, 8.8 $75, irs set up, prolly $150

what gears does the 8.8 have ?That would be your best bet hold decent power with 5.0l's 9.1/4 little overkill, and i dont know much about the dana 44 but either way they will all have to be cut to fit,the datsun pick up truck rears are really stronge but you need to find an older one with the aluminum center section they come with 4.37 gears.

I think 8.8 should be plenty stout and looks to be easy to find and mod. BTWY, you are crazy. that is all.

all the axles i have are between 3.07 and 3.73, im not sure what ill end up w/ for gears

the 44, 8.8, and 9.25 are all within 1.5" (.75" per side) of stock width, so w/ wheelspacing thats all set

also what kinda limited slip/locker to run, all my jeeps i just spooled

Did you give up on trying to manually control the A604? If not, how far along did you get?

If you can find I think a saleem or a turbo mustang or on, they had an aluminum rear 8.8 IIRC.

here is gobs of info on the 8.8:

you could use a 8 3/4 A body(dart demon duster) this way you can use small bolt and have stock wheels.

or i could deliver a 86 chrysler laser that has already been converted to rwd and a small block. Looking to get 1700 for it delivered (heading to ct in a week). Already has 8 3/4 suregrip rear along with built 904 with rmvb in it. Just needs your small block and is ready to go.

Rock, could you detail out what you did and how well it works to make it shift propperly(I'm assuming you got the 2/1 downshift to work also). I'd like some feedback on how well this idea works and what you would improve on, ect. I know this has nothing to do with this thread, so maybe the origional thread or a new one? Thanks!
