Wow, it's hard to believe this thread has been here since June of '03 and this is the first time I checked it out. Pretty interesting stuff in here! As far as I know, up until the late to mid '90s, there was still a couple RWD conversions left from Chrysler itself. I do not know where they went or anything, but it'd be cool if someone in this community managed to pick them up, and hopefully not some collector hound-dogging them for a future $$$ maker!

I sincerely and cordially applaud the effort of all of you who are looking into/possibly already doing some work of this magnitude on your vehicle. Pretty cool in my book!

The nv2500/np535 is from the first gen dakota so it is just a bolt up. the computer recognizes the speed/distance signal (if you use it). It is also more compact than the ax15 if you are limited by space in your conversion, as I was.

others mentoined using a bellhousing from a '95 dakota - are those a bolt-up too? or do they require modification to work at all? I found a lot of parts listings online near me for '95 dakota bell housings as cheap as $35, and getting a tranny is a breeze as is the driveshaft (family in the auto business). Then I'd just need to hang a rear end in the leafs on my rampage, a little welding to keep the chassis from twising over itself and voila, a rampage done the way it shoudl have been from the factory

if it is still there, the tranny is about 60 with tax. Another 15 or so for the master/slave. 50 for my time pulling and prepping. then shipping from 99205 at 90lbs+/-. I can do a rebuild for 180 plus any hard parts if needed. Clutch and pp would be from the dakota application.

The question of how much power it can handle is still up in the air. I don't think it would be suitable for a racing application or serious abuse. It may also depend on the weight of the vehicle that it is going in to and the level of stress that will be placed on it. On a used tranny, go through it, replace the bearings inspect the hard parts and fill it with a good synthetic and see what happens.

Any stock 2.2/2.5 flywheel works. The key is to make very sure that the crank gets drilled for the input shaft as the RWD needs a pilot bushing (which also uses an adaptor to hold it). Otherwise you'll bind up te whole works. Then use the dakota pressure plate and disc.

wow, this is something i've wanted to do for years. wouldn't it be nice if one of td's
parts vendors stepped up and made a conversion kit for us? i suppose they wouldn't
because we are so CHEAP and feel it wouldn't be profitable. i know i would be one of the first ones to sign up and get one if they did. to bad somebody hasn't make up a
parts list of whats involved in coverting our cars to rear wheel drive. like sombody said
on here.it would be nice to lift the front wheels off the ground.

Parts list can be gleaned from some of the links on this thread I'm sure, but I'll give you the basics.
You'll need 1) Later Dakota bellhousing if you want to use the Supra trans, otherwise you can use Dakota trans complete ( be sure to grab all of the hydraulics for the clutch assembly too).
Any common block can be used, but you must drill the block for side mounts, and of course, make your own brackets. Early Chrysler rubber mounts work well though.
You can use any crankshaft, there is an adaptor for the pilot bushing that can be purchased from Mopar, but you MUST drill the back of the crank for input shaft!
Use the Supra or Dakota rear trans mount and driveshaft yoke (depending on which one you used). The rest is simple.

Where on the block do you drill for mounts? What is the part number for the Mopar pilot bushing? This is a good start but still leaves alot to be specified. If I am using the later Dakota housing, which clutch assembly would I use? thanks, chris
