There are bosses on the block just under the distributor for drivers side. The bosses used for the equal length driveshaft bracket for the pass side. Any decent parts person will know the pilot bushing number (order for the '92 Dakota) two parts are necessary, bushing and adaptor. And again, drill for input shaft clearance. If you use complete Dakota trans use Dakota clutch. If you use Supra trans you'll have to mix parts because of spline differences. TIII pressure plate for it's durability and possibly Supra disc (some trial & error here) find a GOOD trans catalog and it'll have all the dimensions to pull it together.

Just to expand a bit on what you've laid down. I don't know off hand how big the 2.2 clutch disk if, but Advance Adapters makes a custom 10.5" disk with the Toyota spline size. If the disk is any smaller, you can probably use an off the shelf Tacoma or Tundra disk. Also, if you use the Supra tranny, you'd do yourself a favor by using the AX15 front bearing cover. The snout is longer and all of the clutch components can just be re-used.

You don't know how many times I thought of that when I was helping my buddy build that James Dean Spyder replica. I have it all figured out in my mind.

Thanks for the input (no pun intended). This is a very do-able swap. nvr2old has been putting some miles on the Spitfire now that it's warmed up. Shows lots of promise, once the minor fixes are done it should haul.

Wow this is a long term thread. I need some information where you can get the adapter plates for the automatics. I would guess if a 904 will work then so will the 4 speed overdrive ? See I got a dohc neon head and a a 2.5 and here is the crazy part,I got a 86 mazda rx7.....yup 2.5 dohc mazda rx7. GOD would the ricers hate me ! This would be awesome. If had a 3500 stall with the overdrive the car has a 4.10 posi from the factory ! The 13b is extremely heavy ! A 2.2 /2.5 would be a massive weight loss. But the tranny would gain some of it back. SO WHERE DO I GET ONE OF THESE ADAPTERS..?

there really is no source. chrysler had some experimental units get out and that number is like under 20. one could always build an adapter to make it work. heck I built an adapter plate to run a VW bus trans behind my stroker 2.2 in my unlimited off-road buggy... it worked great but fortunately I had CAD/CAM and CNC equipment at my disposal. a quick and easy conversion I used in my Pro4 circle track car was a 2.2 with dakota bellhousing and a T-5 trans. this worked exceptionally well and had very minimal engineering issues.

I have come up with similar figures thru e-mails and online
topics. Six 2.5/904 Dakota's and another half a dozen bare
904 case's for the 2.2/2.5 family. Notably this pic turns up
often during search's:

Mine should be at track this coming spring with any luck,
no later than SDAC16..........I always finish these dam
projects days before SDAC so you see them untuned

Rear wheel drive stuff, the early Dak trans NP one is regarded as a hunk of s*#t by the transmission rebuilders. I would stay away from it unless you had a swinging deal on one. The Supra trans is very similar to the AX 15 used in the Dak Jeep Wrnaglers and XJs. You could use one from a Cherokee (XJ) that was 2 wd but the Toyota one is a better choice as you get car gear ratios and the shifter is about a foot further back.

Rear wheel drive diffs you don't need to buy a Quaiffe for $1300 you can buy a Lock rite for about $250 or a detroit locker for $300 to $500.

For a car to put it in, see these:

http://www.locostcarclub.co.uk/

Based on the Lotus Super 7 these are scratch built. You don't even need a kit.
Super light weight. Until I ran out of time and money I was planning one of these with either a T3 or hybrid in it. All that in an 1100 pound rear wheel drive car.

While I agree that the dakota trans is probably not the best unit out there in my case it came down to packaging. nothing else would fit because the spitfire has a 'backbone' frame. Ideally i would have prefered the AX15 or even a t5 but without lifting off the body a welding up a whole new frame it just wasn't feasable. Trust me, if I had an unlimited budget I would be building tube chassis Spitfires with 2.5/ax15 and a narrowed 8.8" rearend for sale. After doing all of the development on one car it seems like a waste not to make something come from it. I think I could do a complete car for well under 10 grand.

If someone makes an adapter plate for the 904, that basically means its an adapter for any small block tranny right? And the V10 is based on the LA series, so does that mean its possible to bolt the viper trans up to a turbododge?

Maybe I'm sick...but I have seen RWD minivans w/Chryco V-8s' stuffed in 'em and also 5-speed turbo (2.5L and a custom-done 3.0L). A RWD 5-speed hybrid turbo decked out as a "Shelby" vehicle would be a great road-going perversion. Just imagine the fun one could have showing up at a Ford and/or Shelby show (I think "The Man" might even get as good a laugh out of it as I would) I hate pretentious b*stards, cars are there to enhance life not create a "lifestyle" and attitude
