I dont know a whole lot about welding but I've been looking into building some custom log manifolds out of weld els. Do you guys just use a mig with gas to beld these things? I have a flux core wire feed welder but I'd prtefer to use has. Is it better to tig the manifolds? What is tig welding anyway?

it is better to tig weld them, to older people tig may be more familiar as heli-arc welding, the welds will be much better with tig. tig is sorta like a mix between arc welding and brazing/soldering. here is a little about tig welding

Tig would be the best. But I'm taking a crack at a custom set with my trusty ol' Flux-core welder.

im purchasing a MIG that can just do normal flux also and thats what I plan to use.....

I figure since im buying it to fix some body stuff, I might as well fab up a new front manifold and throw away the crappy stocker.

I'm probably going to go with a mig with gas. I hate flux core with a passion

I have used a mig with gas and a flux core mig back to back and the difference is night and day. I'd never buy a flux core. Mybe I just suck at using a flux core. I was able to do beautiful welds with the gas but nothing but splatter and holes with the flux core

very odd. I never welded anything in my life before this year. But I sorta jumped the gun and went out and purchased myself a cheap old welder. Definately not knowing what I was doing at the time. But I must say, my rear manifold is coming out really nice so far. From what I've been told, I'm laying down some decent beads. Now, if I can do this with a flux-core, then I'm afraid of what I am capable of with a decent welder.

let me learn on a tig and I'll come up with some interesting things for our cars.
