I wouldn't go with more than five to keep weight down and 5 should be able to hold all the torque down as well.

I am certainly open to suggestions. How much torque do you think the cam sprockets see?

Most models on the market today have 3 - 5. I've not seen them with 6 or 8. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I am saying that Findanza, AEM, Kent, Venom, Unorthodox Racing, and HKS use 3 - 5 successfully. I will admit that a lot have 5. I chose middle ground for simplicity.

To undestand what you're dealing with, do the following...

Draw a 3-1/2" circle. Space 8 holes evenly around it. Now draw an arc out +/- 12 degrees from the center of each. Draw in the slots.

Now draw a circle about 2-3/8" in diameter centered inside the first one. On it, space out a ring of circles about 1/2" in diameter. You need 2 bare minimum but really 4 to make sure someone has easy access to them (these are for holding the spocket as you bolt it to the camshaft).

Now observe how little material you have holding the gear together.

My point is that while 6 is probably possible, 8 is getting very thin. Again, I'm open to suggestions, but I'm perplexed as to why you believe 6 or 8 would be required for this to work.
