Hey i know this doesnt deal with the the 3.0 even though i am rebuilding one to put in my daytona. i was wondering if any of you have ever had problems with you gauges fing up. I have switched the guage three time and i dont know what else to do the rpm and the speed dont work. And i was also wondering how good a ram air would work through the nose holes in the front bumper of my car.

Im probably going to ask to have these posts deleted as the thread is already ridiculously long with my own problems.
have you ever gotten the rpm or tach to work?
Ram air is bad if you dont have a filter built in to your design. You have to build a box that gets pressurized.

This is the epic topic in this forum. It teaches people what to do and what can be done with their turbo 3.0 projects.

My last run of the year was a 12.7@114 on 14psi boost. Not a good pass as the slicks didnt hook up till 2nd gear on a bad track.
Freeze plug between the trans blew out at the traps. Same one I reinstalled without replacing earlier this year. My fault of course

It's early September, how do you know it's the last run of the year for the car?

Track is closing. And I dont have anymore free tows. If I can get a tow dolly this winter then next year I will play with that car whenever I want. I probably wont drive it for a long time in my current situation.
Car is too expensive to run right now since I am not working at the moment. Don't have any plans to work the next few months because I am way behind in some prep studies. That might ruin next years race season cause I need to rering the motor but its not important enough to screw my future.

Compare the middle timeslip below to this one. You can see how bad traction was
No traction till 3rd. I wish i could post the datalogs but my laptop doesnt write properly to diskettes.

Going through some old paperwork, I found something disturbing. When I first got my pistons, the rings didnt fit the top groove. The top ring was a 1.5mm but the groove was 1.2mm. I thought Venolia had made a mistake. I had Venolia machine the pistons to fit the rings (i mailed the rings to them).
Well looking on my Total Seal ring order, it says 1.2mm top ring (which is the normal top ring they sell for 3000gt's).
My Venolia piston spec sheet says 1.2mm.
Even the hand drawn post it note of all the engine measurements says 1.2mm top ring.
So Total Seal sent me the wrong top ring 3 years ago
So if I get enough money to rering, (doubtful since i may travel a bunch) I will have to talk to my machine shop about how to make sure things go right this time.
They are buddy buddy with JE so many JE can make me a set of rings and my shop can get a good price. JE's catalog kicks but compared to total seal.

Its interesting info for sure

They did. Even though it wasn't their fault. I feel bad about that now but an apology would do little 3 years later.

Hey man sorry about your ring troubles- I read a post on "the other site" about re-seating rings by removing the spark plugs and spraying brake cleaner in there. Then just crank away and hopefully the rings will seat this time around.

Interesting ideas.
The piston to cylinder clearances are too large to try to stick with the same block. One of the cylinders had to be powerhoned too after my oil failure. So that one has even larger clearances (it burns the most oil and has the highest compression reading because of all that oil)
I feel that the outward tension on the rings is not enough (because of the clearances) to promote the combustion gasses to push the ring outwards, and isntead they just blow bye.

I saw that thread about brake cleaner. Maybe Ill mess around with that for fun.

1. Pull the plugs
2. Spray Brake cleaner (carb cleaner works too but not as well) into the cylinder liberally (flood it).
3.Allow to dry for a few.
4. Dry crank for 3 to 5 seconds about 10 times.
5. Change Oil (use Dino oil)
6. Put everything back together, start the engine, allow it to warm up and drive the dog pee out of it as mentioned above.
Be forewarned, this works but it may lessen the life of your rings. What this does is re-brake the glaze on the cylinder walls using the rings. The cross-hatching should still be effective after the glaze is broken.
**I've only seen this done on race motors that just won't seat. It works and I haven't seen any noticeable premature ring/engine failures afterwards.
I've dry cranked the crap out of new rings before due to an engine not wanting to start after a rebuild, never had a problem. That car is still runing great after 12 years.
Good Luck....
