Yay.

I pulled the rocker arms and inspected the lifters. After running the motor last friday etc they are ALL pumped up to the "max"

This leads me to believe that I need to put the shim back in as the lifters dont seem to be able to deal with my cams even with the longer valves.
The clatter should have been the occasional lifter loosing contact with the valve tip and then slamming back.

If it sounded nastier and wheezier the more throttle you gave it, then that would probably be it. That's what solid lash adjusters sound like when they're a few tens of thousandths out.

I had Slant Six engines in my cars for many years, and the 1960-1980 Slants had mechanical adjusters and solid lifter cams. When adjusted properly they were very quiet and you could barely notice the ticking sound, but if they were way loose, it would sound like a typewriter clicking away under the hood.

i hope thats what it is. btw...did you plastigauge the crankshaft bearings this time? if those measurements where good then you can be confident that the noise isnt coming from the bottom end. also, if you jack the car up and crawl underneath w/ it running, is the "knock" louder?

i really hope it is the lifters! thats an easy fix.

edit: just listened to it for the third time...it does sound like its coming from the top of the motor. i will keep my fingers crossed ;p

I just drove the car around the block.
I <3 boost.

after it warms up the engine doesnt want to idle very well (idled better when cold). I need to buy a battery charger cause the battery in the car still cant start the motor. Battery might be dead. In that case i will have to wait for a new one (and also cry cause they cost like 70+ bucks.

started making boost @ 2300-2400 rpms in 2nd gear.
5ish psi boost around the 3500's but the Rpms were a bit bouncy on the datalog there.

there is still a lot of valvetrain noise but there is not the loud clacking.

I added the shims and I think that did the job. I dont really think this motor will ever be quiet in the topend.

Oh, the car is really fast :P
I dont know what 1st gear is...2nd gear disapears the moment boost hits...and I seem to keep decent traction. This car has ALL its weight over the front tires.

Oh and I am guessing the OBX LSD is really helping. No torque steer.the car just goes. Powersteering is not working as it all sorta drained out when I was painting :P

Rings too tight still? Lets hope it runs in, 'coz I don't like the other things I'm thinking of.

well Im gonna not worry to much about the rings till I have some miles of "seating" under my belt.

I want to borrow bansheenut's gtech :P
I really want to go to the track but I might have some "business" to take care of first.
Also I could try to hit the dyno.

jettadriver mike said he wants to come down on friday...Friday is the midnight drags but I dont really want to drive up there. I still have a lot of "beating" to do on the car. I am hoping this battery charger I bought works (and that the battery doesnt need to be replaced).

I likely have a more free schedule you cory. im not really sure if mike is coming friday. If my car is not behaving properly then i wont waste anyones time.

You still have my number? Give me a call when you would like to do it. Is the battery full of electrolite? Make sure it is an it should be good to take a charge. Saturday may be a perfect day to do it if that works for you. Just keep me updated and we will figure something out.
