Having done some towing with my Voyager, I can say that you don't need brakes on the tow dolly... I have towed my '87 Shadow, '91 Spirit R/T without a trailer brake. I even towed my '96 Grand Caravan...

A trailer brake probably makes it easier, but it is far from necessary.

I think Utah has a law requiring the brakes so if I got pulled over Im guessing there would be some ridiculous ticket.

What kind of dolly do you have?

The stock mitsu gears are 713g (reason why they are worthless and no one should ever use them). Ive convinced a few 3000gt guys with sohc motors to change to the chrysler cam gears because of how much lighter they are.
The advantage is you can make a fat cam idle due to flywheel effect
I wonder how heavy they'd end up being home-made out of 2 sets of chrysler cam sprockets, I'd figure somewhere around 600.

I figure on vans though, the load sensing proportioning valve makes up for a lot.

I understand we're talking about towing cars, but in my experience(which is quite a lot, over 10 years in the marine industry), brakes on a trailor make a WORLD of difference. Traffic isn't a huge chore anymore, putting a lot of wear and tear on the two vehicle is cut down. Not to mention saftey is WAY up!!

Here in Florida if a trailor has a GVW of 3500 or more it MUST have brakes on ALL axles. Now, you can have whatever you want. Cops don't really look for it, but if there is an accident, and you are involved, you had better have propperly functioning brakes on that thing! If not the insurance is going to have a feild day with you.

I know people say they tow this that and the other with some everyday thing, but towing(and doing it safely) is more than just being able to move the load. If you're going to tow a car, I'd suggest having brakes on at least one axle of the trailor. Get discs if you can(drums SUCK!!!). Electric brakes work OK, and I've towed with them and been with others that have too. My view on them is that they can be a little obtrusive at times, but they can also save your @ss too! Surge brakes work well, but they are NOT maintainence free as a lot of people treat them(as well as the rest of the trailor).

Anyways, if you can get brakes, DO IT!! That's my opinion(professional if you want to consider it that)....

I don't disagree that trailer brakes make things easier, I just do not think it is necessary... Keep your distance, take it easy and things will be fine...

My father-in-law and towed my CSX all the way from Arizona to Winnipeg with his home-built car dolly. It was a basic car dolly with no trailer brakes. Oh, and we towed it with none other then our 3.0L Caravan Need trailer brakes? No (at least you legally don't in Manitoba...all the states we went through I don't know, lol). Nice to have? Definitely.

Ondonti - you're starting to use some of my tricks, like calling from a different number to test him!

I'd take the transmissions elsewhere. If he hasn't touched them in 3 weeks and you have to get on him like this about it, he probably won't do the job right even if he does ever do it.

Well since im a bit strapped for time...

I am going to just swap differentials and the differencial carrier housings from the bad trans into a spare transmission and then see how long it will take to get my 4 puck ceramic rebuilt for a large spline imput shaft.

Save me money in the short term but not really a good solution. I will work on finding a better transmission solution if this one does not work out so well. I was prepared to pay for a rebuild but now I dont think there is enough race season left to worry about it. Ive got 8 months once the season ends :P

Going to a friends tomorrow (rob, supperunner...builts 2jz's and 7m supra stuff) and use his vice to swap the 3.77 ring gear onto my OBX and then use his pipe tap to install a drain plug since this spare trans does not have one.

Just an interesting tidbit. I think this was mentioned a year or so ago.

I just put the ported plenum and 58mm tb from the built motor onto my stock motor spirit.

I had the idle air adjustment screw set so high to make the duster idle around 900 rpms...the spirit idles @ 2700 rpms with that throttle setting lol!!!

I dont really understand how that works out.

That's a sexy part! One thing I don't understand, all things being equal. How does a 3 puck hold more torque than a 6puck. Are the pucks bigger on a 3? I can understand that the 6 will be less grabby...

because they are spaced out the flywheel and pressure plate sort of pinch the pucks.

you also get about twice the grabbing power on each puck
