I believe '96-'00 Caravan w/ a 3LV6 would have a 3-sp (A670)...

I do not believe that any '96+ 3LV6 minivan came with a 4-sp...

I can hit four of them with a rock from my back window. Literally. It was the THREE speed A670 (aka 31TE) that phased out in 96, not the FOUR speed A604 (aka 41TE).

31TH, there never was and Electronic 3spd, only Hydraulic.

And they had that transmission until at least 2002. Because the van I have was a decision between it with the 4spd and an identical one with a 3spd.

So far the 4sp trans in my '96 Grand Caravan (3.3LV6) has had ZERO problems. It currently has about 143K miles... Chrysler also put the 4-sp behind the 215hp 3.8LV6 and warrentied it for 7yr/100K miles...

So yes, the current 4-sp is better than the older 4-sp...

PS. If you have a bad 604 you are better off getting a Mopar one than going with a local shop rebuilt trans. (unless the shop REALLY knows what they are doing. ) I have heard of way too many 604's that lasted to 170+K miles on the factory trans, then had a shop rebuilt trans last ~20K miles...

I think new ones are cheaper then a rebuild anyways. straight from the dealer.

Yeah, once Chrysler installed an external transmission cooler on the A604's, they started to last a lot longer.

Genius!

Not sure about that, but even if the rebuild is cheaper, I would bet it is a case of penny-wise, dollar-stupid...

The other thing I will say, I bet that a lot of 604's were rebuilt when the only problem was a bad sensor...

Not for my pastor. He picked up a used Grand Voyager that had the original trans go out at 170K miles. The prior owner had it rebuilt by a local shop. The trans went out on my pastor at 188K miles. The warrenty was long over with by then. Had the nearest Dodge dealer (he was on vacation at the time) put in a Mopar unit. He is now past 210K miles with no transmission problems...

Also note, that I said that a shop that knows what they are doing should be able to do as well, but you need to make sure they know what they are doing...

I thought we were talking about A604's? I'm confused. And from my experience the factory units are rebuilt the same shoddy way the new ones are....loose tolerances so they have smooth shifts. A good shop knows how to set them up with tighter tolerances and good internals along with the propper upgrades to keep them up to date with all the good stuff...Not all of these upgrades are internal. There are wiring harness upgrades with better plugs for the sensors, newer sensors, newer solendoid packs, ect. I'm not completely up to date on all of the upgrades anymore as I used to be do to my hiatus away from that tranny, but I remember and know enough that not all shops either know or care about these upgrades, even dealers. Also, some rebuilds do not include major internal parts that might have upgraded replacements. This can reduce the overall price up front, but you'll pay for it in the end when it has to be done again!

And BTW, I checked on buying a BRAND NEW A543 a year or so ago...NS1, none in stock in the nation. I even checked for an A523(going for the internals)...same story.
