Those break-in instructions aren't so revolutionary as he thinks. My haynes manuals for various vehicles say that after you do the rings, to do 10-12 bursts of WOT throttle acceleration at 30-50, basically, floor it in 2nd gear, then do the 600 miles gentler break in. Only difference about motomans instructions is to change oil after first break in runs, which just makes sense.

His porting methodology seems to make sense for the kinds of engines he's dealing with, he's pushing the torque curve back and just attempting to make the cross section of the intake path constant, so the flow doesn't stall in the wrong places. You could apply the methodology to anything else, but it doesn't mean you'd build up the ports in the same places, you'd have to think it through for the engine you were dealing with.

btw if you haven't subscribed to that site, you can use google site search to ferret out the back issues.

I was a bit afraid to subscribe. I worried I may start getting spam, but I haven't though. What happens is, you are immediately taken to a new page, which conveniently lists all of his back issues. Great site IMO. I don't understand most of it. But I am hoping to learn.

Well, although not traditional break in, my buddy bought a Trans Am brand new off of the showroom floor and drove it from Las Vegas to Salt Lake at a 130 mph the whole way (minus stop lights and gas breaks.) It drove so nicely and locked up so well that I'm considering doing that to my rebuild, if I ever do get one. Not sure why this seemed to work, but I know it did.

sustained RPMS are not your friend for the first 1000 miles.

I would suggest for the first 1000 miles (after rings are seated) try to get the worst possible gas mileage

The engine's got probably 1,000 miles on it now. I got 22.3mpg the last time I filled up, and that's beating the SHIT out of it. That's better than what I got in my 92 Shadow TBI!

I've always been told by rebuilders and race engine builders to break it in the same way I would normally drive it. Just do the first oil change around 200 miles, then another before 1000. I can't say I've ever lost a motor or lost potential motor lifetime as a result of the way I break it in. Most manufacturers don't even have a break-in period anymore, BTW.
