Stein's new turbo????

This morning I pulled Stein into the barn for some rework in preparation for an October 4th drag event. First item on the list is a new turbo. The turbo is supposed to be T3/T4 hybrid w/60 trim and stage 5 turbine...

Pulled out the turbo I bought and stripped the exhaust swingvalve housing off. Huh, that looks about the same size as what Stein has now... Measuring it, the exhaust turbine exducer and it measures up at 1.92". According to http://www.turboneticsinc.com/pa_turbwheels.htm says this is a stage 1.

Grrr.... So off comes the compressor housing and that measures up as a T04E 57 trim wheel.... So it looks like what I have is a T3/T4 hybrid with a 57 trim and stage 1 turbine...

The good news is, the turbo does appear to be a T3/T4 hybrid and a T3/T4 hybrid does fit on a Stein style exhaust manifold.

So now I am trying to consider my options.

1) Send the turbo back... and buy something else.
2) Slap the .69 AR housing from the old turbo and go.
3) Send the turbo out to TU or somebody else and have a Stage ? turbine installed ane purchase a new exhaust housing...

Not sure how much of an option 1 is, it took a long time to get the turbo across the border the first time....

Option 2 seems like it will result in a turbo that spools faster than the current T3 (from a 2.2L T1 w/.69 AR exhaust housing) and would likely run into more boost creep issues....

So that leaves option 3 as about the only reasonable option... From there I just need to decide what stage turbine to get... Leaning towards stage 3 since that will more closely match the exhaust piping...

Any opinions?

Well back to fitting the new CAI piping.... Looks like I will have to order some more silicone elbows...

Later

Right now I think I may try running the turbo as it is... Though I have been looking through a lot of ebay auctions... I am waiting on the silicone elbows to arrive so I can finish fabing the air pipes...

I need to order some wider tires this could be a wild ride...

Sounds pretty good. I hope you get better tires than I just did. I got the house brand at Discount Tire called "warrior". I am thinking about taking them back because they sound like truck knobbies on the highway. They are supposed to be H rated though, and very durable. I want me some o them dang wide low profile sqaure at boot cool dang tires though bubba.

One of the tires that I am considering is Kumho ASX. The tirerack.com reviews look good and so do the prices... Sadly tirerack does not stock them in a 225 60 15, but there is an ebayer that does... Might want to look at these. <$60 shipped/tire...

225 60 15s'? Cool. I only have 195 60 15s'

Well that's spooky though. I just got off the phone with discount tire, and I ordered those very tires. The reviews of the ASXs' on their site were all raves. They will call me in about two days when they arrive. Gotta hand it to discount tire here in Fort Wayne. They do the best they can to make you happy. The assistant manager said, he would never have recommended those tires I bought, and he will be happy to exchange them.

I asked for another set of Kumho ecsta 76 HPs' the first time. They were good, but they wore out a bit fast. The salesman said, "we don't carry Kumho tires in your size anymore" though, and he recommended their warrior brand instead. He said they were "better", and I just let myself get maneuvered like an idiot. I guess he wanted a commission for selling the house brand. Sucks though. I am going to at least give him a look when I see him.

I hate being a "beeyahtch" about it, but. ...

Tirerack.com didn't have the 225 60 15 either. A guy on ebay sells them.

My second choice was going to be a set of Dunlop Sport A2 Plus in the 225 60 15 size... ( I have them on my van and really like them!)

Personally I hate buying tires at a store... They either try and steer me towards something I don't want or don't know anything about or they automatically tack on road hazard insurance ( ~$20/tire...)

I would rather spend time researching a particular tire and not have to decide if the sales man is being honest and informed with me... I also don't buy into the road hazard insurance. I have bought a lot of tires and never had a problem that required a new tire... I figure I am way ahead by avoiding it...

They charge me a little more for mounting them on my rims, but I usually still come out way ahead buying them online. Especially if you consider the hassle factor of dealing with a sales dude...

I am lucky they would let me exchange tires. I will always research tires before buying from now on. Looking back I can't believe I just walked in there cold like that. Wont happen again.

For me the road hazard is a good thing, because when we travel, we can always find one of their shops for repair or replacement. I already have had one flat fixed under the coverage. Maybe it is too expensive for what you get though.

I have never heard anything but good things about the Kumho ecsta ASX, and so I think I will be alright with those. I wish I knew 3 years ago what I know now. I would have got bigger wheels.

i believe tirerack will pay for your flats if you pay 20 bucks up front or something like that.......they never sent me my coverage plan though (they like to forget it).
Fixing a flat only costs 20 bucks anyways (just hope you dont get a hole near the sidewall).

I am covered for more than just flats though thankfully. I get a new tire balanced and mounted for free, anywhere in the US practically, if they are damaged or even vandalized.

Because I would be doing this down the highway in the rain, and I am enough of a menace as it is.

I still think you should work to get the correct turbo somehow.

State v is a great turbine. stage 1 is not much of an upgrade.

If and when my money situation improves Ed, I will be buying a whole bunch of stuff from you, and then you could go nuts with the turbo upgrade thing.
