A "Romulator" is a piece of hardware that plugs into the EPROM socket on your computer and allows you to make changes "on-the-fly" since it uses a different memory technology that is faster, but requires a controller and connection to a computer.

We've figured out the flashable SBEC, but there are a couple problems yet. Biggest one being that it doesn't program properly using D-Cal. The main problem with the slowness of flashing is that the HC11 doesn't support any standard data rates above 9600bps with the speed that it runs at in these computers. It is possible that using a USB -> serial adapter that supports non-standard baud rates and with some mods to D-Cal that the flash speed could be much faster. But that's after we actually get it to take a cal...

What do you think the problem with D-Cal is? Is it actually in the flash? Or in the verify? The current released version of D-Cal doesn't verify 32k bins correctly. It doesn't know to skip the EEPROM section (B600-B800). Derek made me an updated D-Cal release that fixes that. But, I don't think he released it publicly.

I had asked him about supporting the USB cable, he didn't seem too keen on it. I guess it would take a big re-write of his comunications code.

I guess this part of the discussion really belongs on the MoparChem or D-Cal forum. Sorry for the off-topic, guys.

Assuming for the moment that the current problems with getting the 92+ SBEC code unlocked and decoded continue, I think I have an alternative suggestion.

Megasquirt - Here's what to do.

Megasquirt becomes the standard engine controller for modified 3.0's. So you just get one and put it in, plain and simple.

Now what about programming and tuning Megasquirt?

Here's the part I think will work out best.

Someone will make a good calibration for a couple engine types. Just like how Turbo 4 cylinder calibrations are being made right now. Like one with light mods and N/A, one with more mods and N/A, and one or more versions for Turbo 3.0 cars.

So if you have a mildly modded 3.0 with certain things, like a ported intake, 52mm, stock injectors, K&N, 2-1/2" exhaust, stock cams, and mildly ported heads, a calibration would be available that would at least get you pretty close to having a smoothly running engine. Then it could be run as is or the end user could fine tune it a bit more.

Just putting this suggestion out there.

Their "break even point" will be far less then ours so they can offer the cals at a discount which makes it difficult for us to recoup our investment or actually create revenue. These are the challenges we face in a niche market. If there was a way to guarantee a return on our investment by either money up front or a non-compete agreement between vendors/individuals you would see a whole lot more products coming to this market from us. Based on history I don't see that happening.

im pretty sure id still stick with TU even if some other vendor made it cheaper.......i know what im getting for the money with you guys

Well, yeah. Go check out ... oh, never mind, the links would be blocked anyway. Suffice it to say, there are other web sites out there with a ton of info on the stock and modified factory turbo cals from '87 thru '91...

What's the big secret? I don't know the exact links, but these people are probably referring to something at turbo dash mopar dot com.

Big F'in deal on what site the information is on, that's how I see it.
