yeah, im not going to do anything til i have my cousin physically inspect the rod caps. is there any way to put pistons in from the BOTTOM of the block? if i can do that, ill pull the rods and do it that way. trying to avoid $60 HGs and $40 head bolts

measured the #1 rod ID - 2.081-2.085, crank measured 1.965 on 90* rotations, so from what i can tell, the #1 (worst looking rod) is still dead on spec.

all six crank rod journals measured 1.965-1.967 *shrug* ill measure the other rod IDs tomorrow.

I've heard of it done on other motors, I'd imagine you might have to ream out the whole bottom of the bore though, and you've got the angle of the vee to contend with, gotta be easier on I4s.

yeah, took a look at the bottom end, there's NO way i can get the pistons out the botom. but with the rod and crank being within spec, i wont have to pull the rods

Hey Shadow,
Double check your rod bore measurements, they appear smaller than stock(2.081/2.085 vs 2.0866/2.0868). And you're going to measure down to ten thousandths.
Your #1 journal at 1.965 is under by 0.0027/0.0035, that's gonna be loose with standard Brgs.

From the Clevite bearing catalog. It also listed two rod forging #s, 72G & 72W.

Hey Shadow,
A link? Man, I'm from the last century. I have the catalog at work. The bearing info covered all the the 3.0s, SOHC 12 & 24v & DOHC. I'll look for a link to Clevite, otherwise I'll bring the book home Mon.

Quick question since I haven't seen pictures of the specific rod/bearing in question. Was the bearing tang that fits in the groove gone?

Hey Shadow,
I didn't find the data on the Clevite site, but they have recon rods listed. The part # is CR 1104. No price listed, but I can check Mon.
And what about the tangs? Are they wiped? If not, the brgs. didn't spin or move.
SpeedyEd
Just looked at your photos again, & the rod brg. tang looks ok. Was there some sign that the brg spun in the rod?

Tangs on all bearings LOOK fine (dont know how new ones look so *shrug*) re-checked the rod journals on the rank today, 1.968 on all, dead nuts on spec. being tired, sunburnt and fatigued probably didnt help last night lol. i also plastigauged the #1 rod clearance, .001 (variance is .0008-.0019) its looking more and more like nothing is wrong with the rods or crank ill plastigauge the rest of the rods sometime today

Ok,
So much for the good news. Now you have to find the real cause of the noise.
I'm glad the bearings didn't spin, 'cause thats expensive.
Time to stop sunning & get to work. There's tires that need to get smoked!
