this maybe a dumb question but when it is installed does the turbo go down towards the road or up towards the hood

The turbo mounts up toward the hood. Sort of over the rear valve cover.

ok i have a couple other questions to what size flanges are used and would a stock 14b turbo fit?

The turbo inlet flange is a standard T3 flange (aka Ford T3). If you can get an exhaust housing with a T3 flange, it will work...

I have toyed with offering a different flange, but that would be extra and I would need the turbo or at least the exhaust housing to make sure the placement is right.

I wouldnt use a 14b.
The exhaust side is going to kill top end.
