Are the piston rings supposed to be able to be twisted like this???

While I am showing things... Here is the #3 rod. Hard to tell from the picture, but the bearing it was spun bad and the rod is now warped. The cap will no longer go back on...

Here is the one of the spun bearings.

not as bad as two of my bearing experiences

I wouldnt even try to machine that rod. i learned from that mistake.

What did you do when you took that ring off? just looks like you bent it?
You sorta have to tell us some crazy story to go along with the picture so i dont think things like that

The bearing was spun during a drag run last year. At first I thought I had a lifter ticking. During the teardown I realized that was the case. Rod Bearing #2 was "mildly" spun and Rod bearing #3 was majorly spun. I suspect #3 went first and took #2 with it since they share an oil supply

The #2 rod was repairable. Rod #3 is indeed toast and has been replaced.

The crank has been turned. The rod journals had to be turned down .020".

During reassembly this weekend, Mike attempted to break one of the top rings to clean the ring grooves. The second ring broke like expected, but the top ring just bent. You could probably tie it into a pretzel.

I suspect this is why my machinist recommended plasma coated rings. I opted for chrome rings which are supposed to be slightly better. The rings (both top and second) are gapped to 0.025"...

Oh ... so that's what happened to that ring. I thought it somehow twisted like that in cylinder, and I could not imagine how it could.

i would run a larger 2nd ring gap on any boosted car then you have on the top ring.
