my plan is I have a 55dodge truck i just bought a montero frame to put under it what i would like to do is turbo the 3.0 and leave the factory running gear in it i could leave it awd then for when i want to launch. my uestion is what would be a good twin turbo , or single turbo setup be i'm aiming for 500hp or more of course and somewhere around 400 foot pounds i have everthing i need to build it I have a speed shop at my disposal ,another thing what will the factory lower end hold . I would like to stay within safe rpm levels for the timing belt i dont know what you can turn a 3.0 to reasonbly . I guess my big uestion is turbo ? all of my time with turbos has been spent on fourbangers so i don't know for sure what would work to get this horsepower getting the boost is easy what concerns me is the exaust side not flowing enough

I have played around with my desktop dyno a little but I dont trust it and wanted to get some opinoins for people who have played with the 3.0

Do some research on how to read turbo compressor maps and that will help you determine which turbo will be appropriate for a single or twin turbo setup. When you say 500hp, do you mean 500 wheel hp or crank hp? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the stock bottom end with forged pistons is good for a reliable 450 crank ft-lbs of torque?

Your not gonna get 500whp with smallish turbos without getting 600+ftlb of torque in my opinion.....unless you do some magic to make the valvetrain handle high rev's and get some good flowing heads from Ed Kellly.

Thanks for the help

I was looking for 500hp at the crank as far as i'm concerned the more tq
the better, that was just seemed fairly reasonable accordong to my desktop ( see why I wanted to ask somebody who has done it before) i'm going to be lucky to hit 3200lbs with the truck body I was going to lighten the body as much as possible but it's still pretty thick iron. . realibility is not as much of an issue with this project but would like to be able to take a 300mile trip with it so i would like to build it right but it doesn't need to be bullet proof (weekend warrior)

Good luck keeping the Montero AWD system together with that kind of HP/torque.

Swapping a First/second gen Dakota frame seems to be a better way to go....if you only do RWD and not AWD.

Justa thought.... Sounds like a cool project though.

well my hope is that because of the turbo and automatic the power curve will be smooth enough that it will live for a little. while I dont think it's bullet proof by any means what do you guys think i'll have to do to the lower end to get the horse power , tq range I want. i figured i would run 12psi like I said this is all figures from my desktop so any input from people who have experaince with turboing 3.0 will greatly be apprec. I have done a little resarch and I think I want to run twin te04s mitsu that will hopefully put lag up there a little bit to save the tranny I think the rest of the drive train will hold I saw a toyota with a 440 that held untill he sunk it in the bottom of the river for about 6months so i'll try it you dont know till it breaks
