So I take it you don't have much faith in the MMO and oil change idea then?

I think I should get step by step instructions somewhere with pics and all. Seems like doing something like this, for the first time, by following instructions is just plain crazy, but I did the R&R on the exhaust and intake parts, took the TB and plenum apart and reassembled them after they were coated too, without having a clue about what I was doing.

Still seems like a crazy thing to do though. So I just may do it.

Thanks for your help Brent.

I would be using an old craftsman manual, and so that is sure to be a jolly time.

No biggie.

I see trouble right there. I am old and decreeped, can't see a damn thing anymore, and I got a bad case of CRS too. Well lets just say it will be harder for me than it is for you.

Actually for me that will be the fun part. I like that kind of stuff.

I would rather parachute into the arctic wearing a wet bikini than do that job, and the very idea of me wearing a bikini, at my age, is absolutely horrifying.

ah HA! I knew it!

That is just the "sort of thing" that would drive me over the edge. I would bollix the whole thing up, and then I would wind up on the garage floor, in fetal position, covered in grease and crying.

I am not a natural mechanic at all. Just changing spark plugs is a huge deal for me.

When I was assembling the valvetrain for my 3.0 I just put in my Shadow ES, here's what I did on the lifters:

Set rocker assembly on clean cardboard, upside down.

Drop lifters into place.

Use vinyl electrical tape to tape the lifters in, the tape overlaps itself only a little bit, and I folded over the end of the tape to make a handle for later.

Install rocker assembly onto head, tighten bolts part way until the lifters have little to no slack space in them.

Pull off electrical tape from each lifter, tighten down the bolts.

Worked great for me.

Sounds like you are a real problem solver Tim.

I think the problem is solved now though. I drained all the new oil accidentally, because it was too hot to try put that plug back in, to stop it form draining all the way out.

I refilled with 1 qt Marvel Mystery Oil, 1 oz Honda polynester 2 cycle racing oil, 1 qt Valvoline 10w 40 dino, 2.5 qts Valvoline Syntech 10w 30, and then I went for a long hard drive. I also went off on a corn road, put it in first gear, and flexed the rings really good several times.

Once I got home the HLA noise was almost gone, and tomorrow afternoon I am changing to Valvoline 10w 30 Durablend with a Purolator Pure 1 filter. I bet that takes care of it. If not then I will do the damn HLA replacement therapy.

I changed the oil and filter again today, and though it is better it is still there. I'll give it another week, and if it doesn't pump up I will put in new HLAs.

Yeah um I already posted this as I have done this exact job about 20 times and it doubles the time needed to do the job.

No reason do to any of that unless you are shimming the lifters.

I am thinking of getting my HLAs from these guys. Mizpah Precision Word has it that their rebuilds are better than new OEM ones.

I been studying up a bit. Apparently HLAs usually pump right back up or not at all. It looks like I am going to have to do it. Man I hope I don't screw up.

That lifter finally pumped up! It's quiet once again.

Thanks everyone for your help.
