Considering the amount of miles, and frictional losses in the trans, those are damn good numbers...probably not much more the 5hp below what it made off the factory floor.
It's good enough that I think I'm going ot use this motor for my rebuild, rather than getting a lower mileage junker motor.

Sorta makes me want to rebuilt the motor in my spirit. Ive never driven a "new" 3.0 with stockish compression.

If you want to do some part testing for me, you can get some free dyne time.

Those exhaust mani inserts? How much tear down will that entail? Just unbolt the manis and slip them in, or what?

So it depends. I admit I am intrigued though.

I thought the 3.0L was like 156HP @ crank stock though, do we really lose that much in the drivetrain?

Its rated 140 crankhp

But that motor has well over 200k on it and compression is not going to be good compared to a 50-100k motor.

Its like those 2.5L's with 200k miles that still run 15's on 18 pounds of boost and spit oil everywhere from blowbye.

15% drivetrain loss is common number used for FWD manual trans. So,

140 * .85 = 119 whp...

Is the loss much higher with a 41te (A604)?

The general number thrown around for auto trans loss is 20%. That said, the torque converter can radically change the shape of torque curve with it's torque multiplication. The usual result the the low-end torque is bumped up.

I have often wondered why Brent didn't/hasn't gone with an AT w/ a high stall torque converter. Say a 5K RPM stall.

hmmmm You know I have never thought about this before. The TC acts like a flywheel storing kinetic energy. Now I have some idea of why so many drag cars are automatic.

built auto trannies are like $3500-5000 and the converter will run around 1000 dollars too. (this is for a goood built auto tranny from darrel cox or SMP not a fake built one).

I dont want to invest in a cage for my rusty duster so getting better e.t.'s is not a priority.

Mine, as stated before with similar mods(I had a CAI), put down 129hp though an A604 with similar milage on the engine.

Mods:
2.5" exhaust(no cat, straight through muffler)
CAI
timing at 15*(IIRC)
52mm T-body
180* t-stat

I think those were the only "real" mods...

Built A670's aren't that much money, and if somebody charges you that amount, they are ripping you off. You can build a good A670 for about $1200. That includes Alto clutches, new bands, upgraded internal hardparts, and a MRPVB. Add a custom converter($3-500) and you are good to go. Now, if you want a true LSD(Pelequin(sp?) or Quaife), of course it will add to the cost, but the tranny itself isn't that much.

Now, you want to talk about a built A604...$1800 to start...it goes up from there.
