I'm sure this has been brought up before but ive been doing some math here and my 93 daytona isnt exactly getting what id call good gas mileage. Even when it was my DD a few months back it was getting better mileage than it is now. I changed the 02 sensor which helped slightly. I guess i could change the plugs and wires too but the car runs fine etc. The thing is i do most highway driving anyway....but i only get about 235 240 ish to a tank of gas...i was getting about 275-280 with a little bit of both highway and city. The iroc on straight hightway got over 300....but its also a 5 speed with working cruise. Any suggestions? What about you guys?

14 gal tank. I guess im more worried about my drop in gas mileage more than anything. If i had those miles back i would only have to fill up once a week rather than like one and a half

OK. Then you are getting between 15.6 - 16 mpg. Wow. Not good.

My van with an A604, around town [not highway], gets 22 mpg.

Edit: oops! 22 not 23

by the way that's short trips no highway at all

How many miles on your ......

oil and filter?

air filter?

spark plugs?

cap and rotor?

plug wires?

ignition coil?

When was the last time you ran some Techron or alternate through your gas?

I'm thinking of ideas for ya.

Change the oil and filter every 3 thousand. Just used sea foam in the oil when i changed it last. I honestly dont know about the plugs etc. Could probably use a new ignition coil though to be honest. I should probably change plugs wires and coil this weekend just to do it. The car has 180 thousand on it. The heads were redone at like 140,000 which was prolly when plugs and wires were done. The fuel pump went out so i nabbed one out of a 2.5 daytona i had. The pump was the same though...but it was after that the problems started to happen. I need to check my fuel pressure and stuff i guess.

OK.

Maybe you stirred up some crud, when you changed pumps, and that loaded up the fuel filter. So change the filter before checking the fuel pressure. Bet you knew that.

It is probably time for plugs, and wires, depending on what you put on last time. I think if it has the original coil it is by now probably a bit weak. I use a Dodge 3.9 truck coil. Same price as the OE coil, and I think the part number is 8228. It looks exactly the same, except the output terminal is male instead of female, and it fits the OE coil bracket perfectly. You get a better spark, at the same price, because it puts out 12K more volts.

Now this is just my opinion. But I think seafoam, while great for some things, is not good in your oil. Very harsh stuff. It immediately reduces your oils lubricity a whole lot, and so it can cause wear even if used very briefly just before changing oil. I don't think it is worth the risk for the little cleaning it could do, because it takes more dwell time on the oil deposits and gunk in your engine, than you would dare allow it to have in order to be effective.

miles per tank means nothing as far as "good bad"
If you always refill at the exact same level then i guess it can indicate change in fuel consumption but...

What MPG? If you drive the car more short distances with cold engine then thats where your mileage is going.

Also remember to calculate in any speedo % corrections. I have a 7% correction on my spirit.
I get 23-25.5mpg on normal mixed driving (lots of cold engine short drives).
24-25 when driving 80mph.
30mpg when driving 60-70.

If you want to help mileage, use a 195 deg thermostat

That first part makes no sense at all Ondonti. He said miles per tank, not miles per fill up, and I doubt he's stupid.

By the way. He said he drives mostly highway.

oops: irocelectric I did my figures wrong by using 15 gallons for your tank. You're still getting bad mileage though.

ondonti does bring up a good point i think...nobody runs their car until it is completely out of gas, so you can't assume that that is 275-280 miles on 14 gallons. You should recheck it by calculating it the right way...which is at the pump.

We are talking about 20-25 more miles here too, could this not just be due to driving style? It calculates out only a few miles per gallon. We are talking about thinks like a few hard acceleration runs, tire pressure, driving style, maybe catching a few lights bad, less highway driving, ect with that small of a change.

oh...even at the low end, 275 miles on (running the tank dry) 14 gallons, his is getting like 19-20. Which isn't too far away from what i would expect from a v6 car.

Edit: And have you checked your air filter?

Whats wrong with the comments made?
You measure fuel consumption by gallons filled in your tank when you refill and mileage during that period.

Anything else is going to give you a number that is way too low or that is very inconsistent.

Its totally meaningless to say "i get xxx miles per tank" unless you run the tank empty or you refill.

Also the tank has slightly more capacity then stated so running it completely empty wouldnt give accurate results either.

I get around 21-26mpg around town screwing around. If I really beat the crap out of it I could get it down to 18. On the highway I got a best of 32mpg through the Carolinas at 65-70. That was with a bolt-on 3.0 and a 3.77 trans. My 3.0 wasn't too bad on the fuel, I really hope the 10:1 motor is even better.
Also factor in the "winter blend" gasoline and time spent idling, or spinning the tires in the snow etc. Winter sucks for gas mileage.
