What is a good coil to use on the 3.0? I have NGK plugs, new stock plug wires and a big Accel (I think thats what it is) coil wire. I have one of those big can type coils found on a turbo Daytona, that is Accel too I think. Are those any good? What is a good one to find at the junkyard?

I use the stock Dodge coil, for their 5.9L trucks, part number 8228.

It looks, just like our stock coil, except it has a male output connector.

It fits out coil mount perfectly.

It offers 12,000 volts more than our stock coil.

That and a MSD 6A cd box, will cook you fried rice, for breakfast lunch and dinner.

I've had nothing but great results with just your standard Ford 5.0L Mustang coil. They're cheap and pack one hellova punch. The only other coil I liked better than the Ford coil was the Crane Cams LX-92 coil. But on these 3.0L motors, once you have a good ignition, you don't need "the best". Unless you're turbocharged, I wouldn't suggest anything more than a stock replacement Ford unit or a Blaster SS coil from MSD.

the 5.0 coil requires finding a way to mount it! My method is sorta goofy.

Simple bracket bolted to the front of the intake plenum and you're in business.

Or, modify the stock one with a plate large enough to mount the ford coil onto it.

My two chosen methods. But the second one actually works better, if you don't make the first one out of thick enough material.

I did #2 but I alaways thought it looked goofy. Especially because the bolts I used were way to long.

What is the output of the stock coil versus the Ram coil and the Mustang coil?

Don't worry about the volts of a unit. It's the amps that make the spark hot as heck.

I won't use anything under 350mA. And I believe the Ford unit is around 400mA. The MSD Blaster SS coil is around 300mA.

All three coils throw over 38k volts.

So does anyone think aftermarket 5.0 coils can be better then the stocker? Reaper has me confused about their claims of higher dwell time etc since that is ecu controlled?

Sure..I think some of them can be better than a stock one. I didn't mean to confuse you on the dwell time. Sorry about that.

What has you confused? I'll try and clear up my thoughts a bit if it might help...

This is what I was interested in you explaining.
I am probably going to buy another stock 5.0 coil for my spirit because I am messing around with passing emissions on my spirit while it visits Seattle (where it is registered )

Hmm...I'll have to investigate this. It sounds like they over ride the stock dwell time though with some sort of electronic control...
