I would personally get an Volt-ohm meter and check then Continuity of the (radiator fan switch) thermo switch not the Coolant temp sensor! The thermo switch (radiator Fan switch)closes the circuit to energize the fan relay which in turn energizes the fan! Check the radiator thermo switch @ ambient temparture it should be open and then hang it in a pot of boiling water with a thermometer and the thermo switch (radiator Fan switch)should close @ 160-180 degrees F. The radiator fan switch is located on the left lower radiator tank (engine side). The CTS is connected to your ECU... The radiator fan switch is not connected to the ECU fust the fan circuit!

No problemo. I just love your handle btw, Screamin4banger. Thanks a bunch for helping out here. I should have said that before.

vader85,

Thanks for helping out.

However, ref 92-95, 3.0s. I think the thermo which, controls our 3.0 fan, pokes into the thermostat housing box, and it is nearby the CTS poking into the water jacket.

On edit: OOPS! That's all wrong. I am looking it up in the FSM now. Back soon with good info.

Foxit Reader FTW

Lookin,

since you just looked it up, does the 3.0 use an ambient temp switch like vader suggests? Or no?
everything I have looks like Chryco did away with that when they stopped using ESA's. Thats what my diagram was showing...it wasn't a 3.0 diagram, just a diagram to show ECU involvement. My SC doesn't have that that temp switch, I remember my turismos and old omnis did.

I looked at your 3.0 diagrams and didn't see a temp switch, just the expected gauge sender and CTS.
That leads me to believe they didnt use a temp switch on that car.

Or am I confused?

No temp switch on the 3.0. Just a 2-wire CTS and a one wire gauge sender.

your problem is most likley the fan its self. The thin denso fans when they get old will either turn too slow or will not run at all when too hot. I have had 2 do this in my lebaron. When you think the fan should be on and it is not pop the plug at the fan and check voltage going to the fan. Sometimes hitting the fan housing will start them but they may run slow. Letting them sit for 15 minutes will sometime let them cool enough to work fine again and you can watch the temp just drop.

Dodgy sensor grounding would normally make the gauge read low, or act glitchy.

I'm never sure when talking about cooling issues online though, whether the person with the problem is overreacting to relatively minor gauge movement. i.e. "It's been sitting at about a quarter all winter, now it's at a half, that's DOUBLE the temperature OMG!!!111"

IMO if it switches the fan on somewhere between about 5/8 and 7/8 gauge deflection and dumps it down to half fairly quickly then there's nothing wrong.
