If you were using an a604 tranny, yes, it might be possible.
5 speeds have much smaller bearings, The PTU shaft fits inside the diff material that the bearing is pressed onto. The PTU shaft is about the same size as the inner diameter of the 5 speed bearing though :(
No chance of making it work.

Peloquin is supposedly going to make an a604 differential but its not obx priced and i already have an OBX :(

Yeah, a ford aerostar is available with 3.42 and lsd factory, rock crawler guys use them I think. There are lots of options.

Aerostar? The aerostar had a solid stick axle. It may have been 3.42, and maybe even LSD, but it is just an 8.8 ford rear. In fact it doesn't even have equal length axles from side to side. The pumpkin is offset. The Passenger side axle is slightly shorter I know this because it is common to use 2 passenger side axles and drums to make a 4 lug mustang into a 5 lug rear for cheap.

If that is all you are looking for is a stick axle that has a 3.42 axle ratio there are lots of 10 bolt GM axles with that exact same ratio in the back of automatic F-cars. they are all over. 3.42 is a pretty common axle ratio. If I were going to try to make one for my car, since only half of your power will see this axle I think the much lighter 7.5 Ford rear end would be a better option. I have personally seen one of these make a 12.0 pass in a 450+ hp mustang. Obviously traction is going to be the factor in a RWD only 7.5 living, but in our little cars?

Actually I know that GM used that 3.42 axle ratio much more than ford ever did. In fact I cannot find any ford axles with that ratio from the factory, or any companies that sell that ratio for them. GM is your bet. Safari vans, with the 4.3 v6. Hope the info helps

So i wonder how well this would work in a maserati lebaron as they are shortened from maserati...cant be too much bigger then a omni and i imagine you have to shorten the rear driveshaft anyways, mine also have a a413 too. hmm..

I wouldn't know about location, just that i was doing some googling of ratios.
Offset diff wouldnt be a good thing and I dont want to force myself to use custom axles.

I think there is a toyota tacoma rear end that works....!

yeah, when I did a search for that ratio a few toyota axles come up. I would definitely look for GM 7.5 10 bolt axle. They are in tons of vehicles. Should be a really cheap option and you know you can get the ratio you need if you go GM. Yeah, I know that the Aerostar and Ranger axles are offset.

I haven't heard much about GM being offset axles so that shouldn't be a problem, but just about any truck, even S10 is going to be wider than a TD. You don't necessarily need to do custom axles though if you shorten your axles, as most splines are just cut into the axle. All you have to do is have a machine shop cut your axles and machine new splines into it. No big deal. You can get away things like this because you aren't using the axle as a only source of propulsion. It won't see that much stress, and even if it does break, replacements are cheap.

Maserati LeBaron? Umm, do you mean a Maserati TC? If so, then it is NOT a LeBaron. The ONLY body part that is possibly interchangable is the door, but I don't know if that was ever confirmed. A TC is DEFINATLY NOT a modified LeBaron and is it's own car based on the K-platform.

If anything the LeBaron is a modified TC as the TC was in preliminary design BEFORE the LeBaron!

At any rate, to answer your question, the adaptation of the system WILL require modification to the driveline as well as the car, regardless of what car you are attempting to graft it to.

Eh...didn't mean to "go off", but it is a bit if a petpeave of mine when somebody directly compares the TC and the 'Baron as the same car. Sorry if it was a little harsh...

got an idea: do you have any pictures of the shaft that inserts into the diff? i was thinking, since its too big for an A543 diff. why not chop the shaft and weld a splined stump off a normal axle to adapt the shaft to the A543? you weld the sucker enough (and correctly) id think it would take some abuse. a ring weld on the inside and outside perhaps?

theres ALWAYS a way to make something fit lol. id have to see the setup to get a better idea though. i REALLY want to have this AWD work with a 5spd and an LSD in both the front and rear.

like I said, you can buy an lsd for the a604. Just the ones we have wont work.

I dont quite get your idea as it either sounds like it would break easy or that the passenger axle would no longer be able to fit through? I dont know anyone who can do precision work like that .

hence why id have to see pictures. IIRC you said there was a hollow shaft that went through the PTU and connected to the diff to pass the power to the front right axle. thats what i was suggesting needed to be modified.

The hollow shaft is what engages the diff to send power to the PTU. The passenger side axles passes THROUGH that shaft.

Haha no its fine, someone has already told me that before with a link about the whole build of it...which was a pretty cool read. Its still too funny to not call it a maserati lebaron!! kind of a inside joke between me and all my car buddies. You seem like a big fan of these cars you should buy mine from me!!;)

^^LOL. I would actually like to have a nice example of one some day, but that is not any time soon...I've got WAY too much going on right now to deal with yet another vehicle. Thanks for the offer though! ;)
