Here is the work I have now. I will work on weight and measurements in the future. I can get more pictures of anything if requested.

Weights. I have pictures but I dont know when I will feel like posting them all.

PTU - 35 lb
driveshaft - 20 lb
Axle - 15 lb x2
Rear End - 57 lb
Coupler - 60 pounds
misc parts and bolts - 6 pounds

148 pounds minus coupler (probably 10 more pounds for lengthened driveshaft).

208 pounds with coupler.

Then add the weight of rear disc brake setup attacked to rear axle, or using your own axle. (not using crappy huge 8" wide minivan drums).

It is a bolton for a604/a413 transmissions. For 543/523/568 you have to drill and tap the case for the PTU adapter shown in picture #3.
And you have to swap ring gears and bolt it on the other side of the flange of the differential because the ring gear is located differently on the 4 speed auto.

huh, it looks like its more of a bolt up to the A543 than you think. the diff is in the same orientation, and the PTU adapter looks like the same bolt pattern as the shaft extension on the pass. side of my A543. this gives me ideas too.

How strong is the PTU? would it hold up to abuse?

Some people seem to think its very strong. At least compared to some import AWD systems. Our transfer case is pretty dang big. It uses a hallow shaft so the passenger axle can go through the middle and engage the other side of the spider gears on the Diff. It might be possible to use an LSD diff in the front if you can get the splines for the PTU shaft cut into your LSD Diff.

I haven't compared the bolt pattern. Someone else said auto doesnt bolt to 5 speed. Either way, that is the easy part. The hard part is the rear end.

The 2001 (or something like that) has a normal viscous coupler in the rear. This one is controllable with solenoids and crap.

You can use any rear end you want that has a 3.42 ratio if you want LSD, you just wont have the viscous coupler likely.

I havent decided what I will use in the rear yet.

i was thinking something like that, ditching the VCU and putting something with an LSD in the back in. that way, you could spin all 4 if you had the power hmmm, i wonder what as a 3.42 rear ratio that can do that...

Now, say it can couple to an A543, id need a 3.77 rear ratio then?

I've been told that the quote-unquote later versions are strong, but the early versions tend to fail internally. No idea what the difference between them is, or when they changed it. But I have seen a lot of 3rd gen AWD vans that hit the junkyard with that PTU case pulled already.

It might be the weird coupler they have in the back, they changed that to a viscous coupler in 2001ish.

off topic sort of, but you said this was off a 3.3l van? Did you happen to notice if it had a 58mm tb on it?

And get busy on making the thing awd!

I am looking for gray interior trim for a J-body (1987-1989) LeBaron coupe hardtop. If you have anything please PM me before throwing it out. I am also selling tan trim if you're interested.

Gaw Cory, have to go and ask off topic questions, gaw, those mods should come in and get things back onto track, LOL. I kinda was wondering the same thing when he said where it came from as well.

But looking at the setup, makes me kinda wonder if they "truely" got rid of the AWD setup that they had worked on for the TD's. But will this setup even work with the old TD's? Or were the splines on the shaft different? I think it would be kinda cool to do an AWD A555 Daytona with a 16V conversion on it. Kinda like the Daytona Project that was scrapped by Shelby and Lotus.
