Hey guys.

95 Lebaron GTC.
220,000 miles. 3.0L no knock, new timing belt, ran perfect, problem got worse over 1 week.

Hoping someone might be able to shed some light... My car is doing something odd. If you try to start it normally, it has to crank for ages, and it only "putts" when you let go of the key. It will finally start but its real hard start (like a cold diesel).

Putting your hand over the intake (creating a full choke) will fire it right up. Also sputters at high throttle openings (3/4 or more at less than 2000 rpm).

I know quite a bit about engines, and like to think I've already looked over the basics.

For the longest time, i could hear the fuel pump 'prime up'. I could hear it go 'whirrrrr fizzzz'. Now it just goes 'whirrr'.

I am leaning towards fuel pump but I want to eliminate any other known issues. I'm going to attempt a repair tomorrow, so any chime-ins will be appreciated.

it might be good to pull the codes. but If you can't then try the IAC on the throttle body. also the coolant temp sensor. lastly the O2 sensor. I would bet on the coolant temp and IAC.

Good call. There is a bit of a shwaaaaa sound when its cold... I know what the iac sounds like when its opened up. Also, i've noticed since i've owned the car it has a pretty high idle when its real cold (makes for a pretty hard 2-1 downshift until the trans warms up, then its fine).

Fan has been turning on at weird times lately too. I service my own AC and know that is not the cause though.

My first thought is the fuel pump check valve is going out. Try turning the key to on (but not crank). Leave it there for a 3 count, then turn it off for a three count. Turn the key on for a three count and then crank. If it starts quicker, then it is likely the check valve.

I pulled the line at the engine to hook up my fuel pressure test kit and found that there is 0psi fuel pressure. Now, I'm not one to replace the entire pump module on any car. I usually buy a pump for a 90 calais international with the 2.3 quad4 (high flow, comes with barbed end and wiring) for about $70 bucks and slap it in. Its worked on an s10 with the 2.2, a gmc jimmy with the 4.3 Vortec, and a grand am with the ecotec.

I was going to do the same thing with this problem, but I did a quick ebay search and found this item:

WELL, I was going to post the ebay auction link, but since i'm a new member i'm not allowed post urls. Search ebay for "RK-E7142M-G".

Has anyone ever had experience with fuel pumps like these? It looks like exactly what I need and the model# matches the same model airtex fuel module assembly... except its a repair kit (rk) RK-E7142M-G. E7142M is the airtex 'module' containing the float and everything.

I can't really believe the price, but if its airtex, then.... Well I trust airtex for pretty much as a basic fix.

I'm not a fan of aftermarket pumps airtex included. I install dealer pumps in all my vehicles. The exception is I will install a walbro pump because the pump in a oem mopar unit is a walbro. The vendors here will sell a real walbro for about 100.00. Beware on the internet there are fake walbros. Our vendors sell real ones. A neon kit is almost a drop in for your car. You just have to splice the wires.

Forget aftermarket pumps for these cars. There are plenty of post about the new pump didnt last. The only suitable substitute as indicated is the genuine Walbro unit. Stay far far far away from any aftermarket non-OEM pump is my personal experience.

Well dern. I was checking rock auto and they don't offer a walbro or mopar pump. I'm having a bit of trouble finding those specific brands. I do like rock auto though, they are also a vendor on my other car forum site.

Continuing the search....

Came across this site...
http://www.walbrofuelpumps.com/

They offer a chrysler pump for Chrysler FWD Universal 84-90 and there's a picture of it, but my car is a 95. I hate ordering things and having them delivered without being assured it will work (unlike autozone where you can just drive back across town and exchange it, albeit its more expensive)

Here is their picture of it

IIRC the neon pump fits the 92+ chrysler's but I'm not 100% sure. (some one else can chime in to confirm)

I modified a walbro GS340 (I think) to fit the stock hanger assembly quite easily too...

I got my neon walbro pump from modern performance. It will work in the with the OEM module for that year car but beware most of the aftermarket pump modules are designed differently and won't accept the walbro at all.

see post 6 last line. neon pump is almost a drop in. I have one in my 92. in 91 they changed the pump hanger. so 84-90 does not fit. Call Cindy at fwd performance (one of our vendors here) she will hook you up with the neon walbro. And like I already posted beware of internet walbro's. China has been making knock offs with walbro stamped on them.

The main point I was trying to make was that the walbro WILL NOT work with some aftermarket modules. I just ran into this last month.
