Hey, TDers --

The other day I got my car back together using a used engine and used stock turbo. Soon after starting, it began smoking like mad. I figured, okay, bad seal on the turbo as the engine was reportedly in great condition with only 47k on it.

Now it's been a few months (had a kid, slowed me down a bit). Today I pulled the turbo off. There's no oil in the intake hose, which I assumed there would be (someone told me that was a sign of bad seals). However, there is significant oil residue inside the exhaust manifold. Could that also be caused by a bad turbo? Or are my rings most likely shot?

I'm new to turbos, and not sure if oil could be sucked back through the exhaust -- I'm guessing not.

I haven't tried a compression test. I'm hoping to do that later today.

Ugh.

Tested compression -- all appears to be good. 140-150 all the way across.

So, I'm still hoping it's the turbo. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to get the new one on.

Will report back.

Yes -- buy very cheap fire! This was intended to be a low-cost build-up for casual driving.

Are you referring to the turbo? I assume so. That's relatively good news.
