I always do it from the top, it just seems easier, i dont use a leveler either. I always take the tranny mount off for extra room and just pull the engine forward enough to clear the tranny mount on the frame rail and just pull it straight out the top, i dont even take the hood off

i can get it out of the top in like 30 mins.
