I'm new to the world of cars and recently purchased a 91' Shelby Daytona 2.5L I think it is T1 and has the stock turbo. It was running like crap, plugs were bad, a plug wire was practically ripped in half, 2 vacuume hoses were disconnected. Got that all fixed and it ran pretty good but it was overboosting a lot. Romped on it a little which was dumb and then I heard a weird sound and the check engine light came on and it sort of stalled out. Makes kind of a weird grinding sound, but I was able to drive it the 1/6 of a mile home. My friend said he thinks I may have bent a valve stem. Engine isn't leaking any oil so didn't throw a rod through the engine or anything like that. What do you think happened? The stock boost gauge was a little past the max of 15psi and it was spinning wheels in 3rd so it much have been overboosting pretty bad. Do you think I need a new wastegate actuator?

Just drove it again, wont go higher than 3,000 RPMs and there is a huge loss in power, engine kind of sputters, but no check engine light and it does run. Something wrong with the valves?

Make sure all lines behind the engine are correct, leading to the solenoids, and check timing belt hasn't slipped, which could knock the cam and distributor out of time. I have no idea what is grinding. Wastegate actuator needs pressure applied to it to move, I rigged something with a bike tire pump to test it. You could see if it is seized.

I found a vacuum line going to the actuator that had broken, so hopefully that fixes the overboost problem. A friend I talked to thought that maybe I had blown the head gasket.

It is possible with that much boost. Check for exhaust in coolant, oil in coolant, loss of compression.

I think your timing may have jumped.
