+1 on the adj. cam sprocket. It is a great tool for fine tuning

Now polished or black?

I do believe it will help you solve the issue. With an adjustable cam sprocket you dont move it by teeth(to say) you can go by 1degree or .5degree it really gives you what you need when getting the bugs out of your timing.

+1 ... With Plaining the Head I imagine you will have higher compression and the adj sprocket will let you fine tune it...

im not woried about the compressoin im woried about the timeing being off i gues when you plain or resurface a head the cam timeing gets eft up mine was slitly retarded 1degree or so and when i lined all the timeing marks up it ran like shit so i advanced it 1 tooth = about 6 degrees so know it is too much but runs alot better the head has been a reworked so geting another head is not going to happen im shure one of you guys have had this problem

Mark,
I agree an adjustable cam timing pulley would be a good option for you. However, do you realize how small a couple degrees is? This would be very hard to see without taking some precise measurements. Your absolutely correct that resurfacing the head will retard the camshaft by a couple degrees (depending on how much material was removed from the head). Using the .065 Cometic gasket also retarded the cam timing a bit due to it being thinner than the gasket that came out of the car.

A couple degrees retarded would not make the motor run horrible, but might make it a little poochy at low RPM, and pull harder at higher RPM. Retarding the camshaft just pushes the powerband of the motor upward. BTW - One tooth equals nine degrees. I suspect you had the cam timing retarded by a full tooth.

It is tough to eyeball the camshaft pulley with the camshaft cap parting lines in the car, due to the fenders on the Omni sitting higher than the cam cap parting lines. The easiest way to do this is to put a mirror down there so you can see and set this up properly. Another option is to take the two right motor mount bolts out and lift the motor up on that corner so you can see it correctly. Also be aware that the motor is tilted towards the rear several degrees.

With a sound motor and with a stock camshaft, and with cam timing set correctly, should have about 17-19 HG vacuum at idle @ operating temp. Less than that and you probably have retarded cam timing or retarded crank timing or both.

Good luck,
