well, i've been helping a buddy work on his 88 shelby z 2.2 tII(160,000, here's the symptoms
-number 1 spark plug covered in oil,
-smoking under load, or free revving
-comp test 100psi on all cyl's
changed headgasket (lift and slide) no change, we had the oil pan off and looked up at the piston there were no visable cracks from underneath (which doesnt mean much)
there were no problems present untill the head was taken off to fix an exhaust flange leak (head was hot tanked and ex leak was fixed) so long story short we prolly broke something

we were hoping u guys could help point us in the right direction
thanks
tb

Did you replace the valve seals?

You said you hot tanked the head and if the seals where hard and brittle they may be non-existant at this point.

Compression is 100 PSI Minimum with lowest cylinder being within 25% of the highest.Your problem is oil related and oil rings will not affect compression.
Compression readings of 125-130 PSI are fine.

New valve seals in, the old ones didnt seem too bad, pretty soft, and no cracking. The comp tester is in question, the schreader valve on the bottom was stuck when we first tried to use it, and couldnt find a replacement. We haven't started it because we still have to time it, but it's about ready to start.
the valve guides didnt seem to have to much wear in them either, i don't know where else the oil could be comming from if this isnt it. ???
thanks guys
