im working on a 86 omni 2.2 n/a. im doing a head gasket. can i dump the air injector pump or do i have to put it back. when i bought the car a week ago for $50. i new it needed motor work cause when i check the oil dip stick oil looked like milk shake. i ask this question cause i thought i read that you can get rid of it and plug a oil passage with a tap screw or something. sorry for a dumb question but i hope im right. thanks for your time. james

That all depends on your states emission and inspection laws.

All the Air Injection System does is to create a secondary burn of hydrocarbon emissions in the exhaust and feed fresh air to the catalytic converter.

plus that air pump makes it harder to get to the starter and transmission bolts and it would make it easier manuever being its in the way.

I have not seen one of these old A.I.R. systems in over 15 years.
The system should consist of a belt driven air pump, a diverter valve and plumbing for for upstream and downstream air flow.Removing the air pump should be cut and dry as long as it is run by its own belt. The diverter valve has vacuum lines and air hoses attached.Just remove the vacuum lines at there source and put a rubber cap over the fitting where the vacuum line was removed and remove the rubber hoses from the metal piping that goes to the exhaust.Remove the metal piping from the exhaust.(Heat may be required because they may be rusted in)The fittings should be a pipe thread so you can go to your local hardware store or home center and get pipe plugs to install to plug the openings.

When my car was still carbed, I unhooked it all.. Usually the diverter valves gave up early in the game or if you had the early version of the system 83 under 2.2's in Canada, there were four pipes sealed to the back of the head with copper washers,. . LOL.. try to replace the diverter valve.. no dealer had it available 5 yrs ago, very hard to find. I had passed smog easily with the belt off and the diverter and check valve plugged, <<<just for visual .. After that it all came out.. made a whole lot more room to work under the hood...

Should be 3 or 4 bolts holding the pully and it should come right off. If it is rusted it may require a little persuasion.

The air pump pulley on camshaft is one bolt.

Tulip's is a 1987 caravan 2.2 carb, air pump was working fine till I had to pull it off because replacement camshaft have no provision for pulley because original camshaft is bent by .007. The head was incorrect 782 for the SCC so I got 287 head instead. Got all power back to find out transmission is slipping in 1st, possible 2th too.

Cheers, Wizard

by law it is ILLEGAL to tamper with or remove any emissions control device!!!! ok so everyone is going to jump on me blah, blah, blah. all you need is to have one fed monitoring this board and show up at your door with a $10,000 find and jail time. Oh, "it won't happen to me", feel free to press your luck!!!

I am not going to jump on you, actually you gave him his second warning as I brought this up early in the thread, you just gave him more detailed info and a sterner warning.Actually in some states performance mods are illegal unless they are 50 states certified. In N.J. almost everthing is illegal but that does not keep stores from selling those items or people from installing them.
Actually exhaust noise is at the discretion of the police officer as to being to loud even if the vehicle has passed state inspection. My son was ticketed twice for noise with his 94 Duster and he researched all state and local laws and purchased a decibal meter and compared his exhaust to numerous factory vehicles that were at the same or more decibals and still lost twice in court.
