Okay so I got a factory Chrysler TPS for my Sundance. The problem is, I do not see a 6-way plug on my car like the instructions suggest i should have. The "blades" on the replacement part are supposed to go into the plug, but I do not see one in my wiring.

There existing setup on my car has a plug that joins the TPS, but it has three holes that make it look like a traffic light, and is not a 6-way plug. See a generic pic below, my plug looks like one side of that green/orange piece:

After this three-hole plug, the wiring simply gets routed into the main wire harness. No other plugs.

So I am planning to directly splice the three wires.... I will just match up each OEM wire with its counterpart on the replacement TPS, and omit this three-hole plug completely.

Please let me know if you think this is a bad idea or if I need to do something else. I was just planning to wing it on my own, but i thought I would check with you guys first to see what you think.

TPS is mounted externally on the throttle body housing with the AIS motor.
As far as I know the TPS on an 87 T1 is a 3 wire connector and the wire colors are Orange/White, Orange Dark Blue, Black/Light blue.
Replacing the TPS is simply disconnecting the electrical connector, remove 2 screws and it is off.
May I ask why you are replacing the TPS? Did you get this part from a dealership? What is the Mopar Part #?

I do not have the part number with me. As for why I am replacing the TPS, I got a CEL for a bad TPS and also its voltage was all over the place.

I understand what you are saying about disconnecting the TPS and removing the two screws, I have already done that. But the replacement part has THREE BLADES, and the OEM connector on the main wiring harness has THREE SMALL ROUND HOLES. This harness on the car does not look like the harness that the installation instructions are telling me to look for. In essence, the connectors do not mesh so I will be splicing the wires individually. The wire colors on the car and the replacement part are idenitical.

This should be an exact replacement, there should not be any spliceing of wires unless you have a universal TPS which I have never seen or would I use.If you do splice you will have to solder and use heatshrink with weather proofing gel to seal or you will have problems. We are talking about a circuit that sends signals to the controller in millivolts and a faulty connection or exposure to moisture will create drivability problems.

I just got off the phone with a parts guy at the dealer... apparently there were two kinds of TPS's for 1987 turbo 1. One is the part I got, the other has three holes and looks like the part I need, but it has been discontinued. The best the guy could do is come up with a NAPA part number for their version of the connector I need. Looks like I will need to go the route of soldering and heat shrink...

Ask your dealer if he ran a parts locator, that will show any dealers in the country that have it sitting in thier stock, you can get the phone # and they will ship it to you.If you get the Mopar # I can run the parts locator for you and you can call the local part houses and they can cross reference the #.
I would explore all options to get an oe replacement before cutting the factory harness.

Too late... I already cut the factory harness last night. I do not think there is any way to get the wires back into it, either. I am gonna learn this one the hard way

Do you have the proper heat shrink to seal your connection? You can get Mopar Heatshrink at your dealer and you have to slide it over the wires before you solder. The Mopar Heatshrink is Greyish/Black in color and has a gel built in that when heated will release and weather proof the connection.Just use a cigarette lighter to melt the heatshrink moving it back and forth across the heatshrink until the gel squeezes out.
Good Luck.

Tps you got was for a log turbo car since it hard wired to that 6 blade conector it wanted. You must have a blowthrough setup on your car?

Nice thing to know about, that heatshrink! I had to use normal heatshrink on mine when it got a loose connection inside the plug. I am too cheap to pay 100 bucks at the dealer for the plug with the wires all the way back to the computer!

I cut the edges of the plug off my tps so the pins were exposed, soldered on some female terminal connectors and put heatshrink over the whole deal where I connected it with the spade connectors that I had wired into the harness. I tried to be as close as I could with the gauge of wire and length, minus about an inch, probably because of resistance from the spade connectors. It actually works pretty well, does not trip a code 24 anymore. It did at first before I removed that inch of wire though.

No, I have a suck through turbo setup.

I did the work last night, I soldered them up and used the weatherproofing gel on the connections, and then wrapped them individually.

Unfortunately, this work did not fix the issues I was having with the car. I have another post related to that issue.

hesitation at high RPM?
