These engines are a little noisy on top anyway.Exessive noise can mean an oiling/cam/follower or other issue. It's been a while, but I think you can loosen the cam up some and compress the valve spring with a suitable prybar and remove or install individual followers to get them off to change a lifter.easier and cheaper to try another qt of oil though. Intercool that puppy! Somehow! One time I raced a guy in a turbo probe and he jumped the light on me.In my haste to catch him i missed third gear and the engine spat out a follower as i overrevved it to the moon! We just popped it back in and it was fine.

Thanks I will go ahead and put it back together, drop some oil in it and see where it goes. Worst case scenerio I will pull the cam and replace all the lifters with pt lifter and shims =)

I would replace the lifters now if it's that loud. Have a video of it running previously? That cam does look like it has some premature wear going on. Can you feel any grooves in the profile of the cam?

ok now we have somthing to work with here
cam does seem to show a lot of wear
those lifters are hydraulic- you cant adjust them they pump up with oil pressure to take up the lash on the valve. when the motor was rebuilt im assuming the head was redone also? what tends to happen to those lifters is they will fill up with metal particles and then not pump up. theres no way to get rid of them once they are clogged, must be replaced.
you also stated they have side to side play in the lifter bores, there should be very little side play , if at all. but with all the wear on the cam lobes and the lifters having side play one of 2 things happened
1- your buddy did a bunch of mix+ matching when the motor was rebuilt, or did not put lifeters back in thier original bores
2- you have an oil starvation problem, which reduced oil flow, which would explain the cam looking worn.

when was the last time you changed your oil?
was it low?

you can try to fix it, since you work in a JY it will be pretty easy. find another 2.2 , preferably one you can hear run, make sure the valvetrain is quiet. pull the valve cover and take the cam, followers and lifters out of the head and transfer them to the one on the car, making sure to keep the followers and lifters with their respective cam lobes. it doesnt really matter if its a turbo car or not, a TBI cam is actually a mild upgrade over the turbo cam(slightly more duration and lift i believe) you can switch over to a roller cam as well, also shouldnt matter, as long as you take the lifers and everything and transfer them to the head on the car ( a roller cam has a roller that follows the cam lobe instead of a flat slider pad- the parts from the 2 are NOT interchangeable)
when tightening down the cam caps, make sure you have an inch-pound torque wrench! a foot pound torque wrench will not work! install the cam with the lobes for #1 cyl pointing away from the intake/exhaust valves so you're not trying to tighten the caps down against all the valve springs.
tighten to 215 inch pounds. (im assuming yours is an 88?)

sorry about my rant earlier. i needed to take a dump and ive been up for 24 hours straight.....

I agree that the cam lobes look worn... cant really say for certain with those pics. Does your camera have a "macro" mode? Mine has a button with a little flower next to it, Got to hold the camera really steady and make sure there's enough light, but can take a pic from about 2" away for some real close up detail.

Anyone know the service limit for a roller cam? I know a slider cam is ten thou (.010") wear.

When we got the car it just had a bad head.
Hell the car only has 61,000 miles on it. motor was not rebuilt. We bought the head outa NY and it was rebuilt there so my buddy slapped it on the motor~!
the car is an 89 with a 2.5 not a 2.2
I do have an 88 tbi cam =)
I did drop a little oil in and on start up there wasn't much if any noise at all so thats good.
I am going to run to parts store for some stuff and maybe grab some stuff for an oil change aswell. Its prolly time for one now.
The cam did look like it had a little wear to it. If anything I will take the old head we had and rebuild the SOB!
Allmotor your not funny. Between all the BS you seem to have some really good tips and info.
I am morman you dick so none of that was appreciated.
My buddy's are football players so they are a little bit large. I am 215, dane is 230, kyle is about 125, and the gal in the backseat was prolly around 115 (shes not a football player). So we had it weighed down a little bit.
This is not the car I beat the snot out of. I try to take great care of this car!
It is used for cruising in, shows, drive in movies, and small trips here and there.

didnt figure you were into polygamy, you'd be too busy tryin to molest 13yr old girls to ever post on here if you were.
only reason i even knew about the coffe thing was i dated a girl who was morman for a lil while, she seemed to think that i needed to know everything about mormans. id didnt pay too much attention to it though, i was too busy tryin to get her high and pop her cherry.....does that make me a bad infulence>?

i shoulda tried harder, we went our separate ways after a month or so. she ended up getting baked and losing her virginity on the lawn at a pearl jam concert about 2 months later with some guy she met by the concession stand.

but anyway , while you got the valve cover off id swap lifters, followers and cams from another head.
id also look at doing a couple other mods that are pretty quick and easy

TBI valve cover baffle under a turbo valve cover?
basically taking a baffle from a later model tbi car , and making it work under a turbo valvecover- quiets down valvetrain

Lmao! Thats nice for her I guess
I have thought about the tbi valve cover. But I like the turbo valve cover on there.
I am going to powder coat mine blue!
I will forsure start looking for a good cam out at the yard.
I am going to go ahead and check the timing because it's running like it may have advanced itself a bit on the cam!
